WASHINGTON – Just when liberals thought it was safe to start identifying themselves as such, an acclaimed, veteran psychiatrist is making the case that the ideology motivating them is actually a mental disorder.
"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded," says Dr. Lyle Rossiter, author of the new book, "The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness." "Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave."
While political activists on the other side of the spectrum have made similar observations, Rossiter boasts professional credentials and a life virtually free of activism and links to "the vast right-wing conspiracy."
For more than 35 years he has diagnosed and treated more than 1,500 patients as a board-certified clinical psychiatrist and examined more than 2,700 civil and criminal cases as a board-certified forensic psychiatrist. He received his medical and psychiatric training at the University of Chicago.
Rossiter says the kind of liberalism being displayed by the two major candidates for the Democratic Party presidential nomination can only be understood as a psychological disorder.
"A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity – as liberals do," he says. "A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population – as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state – as liberals do."
Dr. Rossiter says the liberal agenda preys on weakness and feelings of inferiority in the population by:
· creating and reinforcing perceptions of victimization;
· satisfying infantile claims to entitlement, indulgence and compensation;
· augmenting primitive feelings of envy;
· rejecting the sovereignty of the individual, subordinating him to the will of the government.
"The roots of liberalism – and its associated madness – can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

This line perfectly describes the posts of every self proclaimed liberal on this site. And, makes it clear which ones are liberal while denying the charge.:mrgreen:

You are totally mistaken. Liberals are the middle class for the most part. If they want to take from anyone it is from the rich. Liberals just want every citizen to have an equal chance at success. This means that the top 5% of people in a society should contribute more so the bottom 20% can move up to middle class. This used to be the norm when the good times rolled, 10-20 years ago. Bush gave 90% of the tax relief to the top 3% and the corporations. What Obama proposes is to repeal those tax cuts, not the pittance granted to the middle class. Can you even imagine giving a tax credit to corporations that move jobs offshore? Bush did!

The top 50% of income earners pay 97% of all income taxes. Of that, the top 1% of income earners pay 39% of all income taxes.

If they want to take from anyone it is from the rich.

If you want corporations to move back into the country, and the jobs that will come with them, then you should be in favor of the Fair Tax, thereby eliminating ALL income taxes, ALL taxes on capital and ALL taxes on production. The reason they have moved off shore is because of our unfavorable and uncompetitive tax system. Do some research on the Fair Tax and you'll see how well the lower income folks will benefit and how our economy will boom. Also, the K Street lobby scum will be gone forever ... and that crusty little bureaucrat who audited my income tax last year will be asking: "Do you want fries with that?" :mrgreen:

So, you think the middle class doesn't work? Well you may be right soon enough. BTW I never advocated giving anything to those too lazy to try. I also had to work untill my retirement, 50 fucking years of mostly manual labor jobs, construction, mechanic, truck driver, etc. I have no use for lazy assholes, but there are a lot of poor people that are willing to work, but the wages offered are not enough to move them off of welfare. If you are on welfare, you get medical for your children. If you go get a job @ 6.00 an hr, you can't even pay rent, let alone all the other expenses and you lose the medical, so you see, the motivation is lacking. I don't have the answer, but it is not as simple as just cutting them off and letting them starve to death. A society needs to take care of those in need, and yes that means the ones a few rungs up the ladder must contribute to that cause, sorry.

You can't concede that liberals are the middle class, ever. A - It just isn't true. Most of the richest asses out there are liberals. Look at the income/worth of Democratic Senators vs Republican Senators, and you'll see a huge discrepancy. And..... B - Idiot libs will base all future arguments on your concession, even though it is fallacious.

True, but you probably also still live with your parents, or, have a second, higher paying job, or, are a second or third tier income earner in your family. Get real, loon.

I agree that is one of the things wrong with our welfare system. It is a disincentive to working and that should change. The way I see it, if you are getting welfare and you were allowed to have a part time job and earn up to 50% more than you are receiving and still get the benefits, with some counseling and access to other programs you could change your life. This idea that as soon as you get to some level you lose all of that help stops you from attempting anything.
The only problem is it doesn't work that way either.

A society needs to take care of those in need, and yes that means the ones a few rungs up the ladder must contribute to that cause, sorry.
And it has been pointed out many times that even though most liberals give those idea lip service it never reaches thier wallets. VV

This argument from Dr. Rossiter is completely bogus, and anyone that truly believes this trash ought to have studied a tad harder in their Political Theory classes. Oh, but wait, the more educated an individual the less likely he/she is to be a conservative, so maybe you never had one. I love how Rossiter accuses liberals of demanding a "parental government"; isn't that what we have now under the neo-cons? Our current conservative government listens to our phone calls, arrests medical marijuana users, attempts to legislate moral standards for the masses, has squandered a mind-blowing amount of our tax money on the "war" in Iraq. Detains people arbitrarily, lies about government inteligence and acts in an exclusively unilateral manner with its approach to world politics. What we have NOW is a parental government (one that engages in child abuse).

"A social scientist who understands human nature..."
"A political leader who understands human nature..."

Last time I checked "human nature" was still up for debate. Is one born good, or are we born with a propensity for evil deeds? Are humans born a "blank slate" and are then shaped by society through processes of socialization? WE DONT FUCKING KNOW. Period.
It simply cannot be proven regardless of how you may feel. This Doctor grounds his arguments in an unprovable "human nature" argument, cutting himself at the knees before he even begins. Perhaps he could have more appropriately worded it: "A political leader who understands, and agrees with my own personal views of human nature..."

Liberals do not ignore differences in talent, drive or work ethic. The watered down idea of wealth redistribution that Liberals seek to employ is based around the idea that all people are not equal mentally, physically or fiscally, and this is not always their fault. We simply cannot, without massive negative consequences, abandon or neglect large numbers of our population because they are not as "smart, fit, handsome etc." as others.

Minor redistrubutions of wealth help to lift up the poorest and most disadvantaged members of the populous, this increases education, reduces despair, promotes cooperation, reduces crime and boosts the economy.
More educated workers = more national wealth = higher standards of living = happiness and self-reliability.

And to myrevolution: So we should work for everything we get, no exceptions? Great. Did you "work" for the schools that you attended K-12? Did you work to be born into the family you were whether good or bad? Did you work for the city or neighborhood or living conditions you were born into?
We, as a nation, have an obligation to help the poor by providing truly equal educations, medicines and activities vital to children etc. It's unfortunately all to common for the priviledged to care for no one but themselves under the guise that they "worked for it". Tell that to the struggling kids of the inner-cities. They are in the position they are in because they didn't work hard enough for a chance at a good life, right?

You Neo-Cons on this board should do a little more independent thinking, self-evaluation and stop simply regurgitating divisive opinion and theory from the Hard-Right bloggers.

P.S. Is it "human nature" to unquestioningly agree, and ingest beliefs and ideas that already match our preconceived notions? Do we hear what we want to hear and block the rest? You decide. Oh wait, let Rush do it for you, then come post here about it.

No, they most certainly are not.

Neo-Con ideology focuses on American "values" exclusively.
For example: American values are increasingly accepted, good and universal.
America should use its power to promote these values.

Neo-cons hold the belief that American values are UNIVERSAL values, and ought to be imposed on the world. Liberals have a focus on international organizations, ideas and compromise, while Neo-Cons focus exclusively on what they deem as "American" values. There is a key distinction.

The "founding" of Neo-conservatism is largely contributed to a group of Chicago academics in the not so distant past. Wolfowitz is a great example. This is a relatively new and untested form of political theory. Liberalism and Realism have old roots, Neo-Conservatism is the new kid on the block.

oh really? i consider myself a liberal leaning libertarian. and i disagree with that completely

every time someone from the republican party does something out of line with limbaugh's beliefs, all of the sudden they are "liberal" no matter what

go to a lot of first world countries and the word conservative means something to the left of what ultra-liberal means here.

Because other scum like Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity have been saying things like this to draw attention and MAKE MONEY for years now!
