I've seen the left claim the same thing about the right. They say the pubs have moved so far to the right that a moderate would never make it through the primaries.
Of course, when I asked who was less moderate than McCain or Romney in the primaries they change the subject.

There is no left in this country, let alone "extreme left". In almost every other country the opposition to conservatives is a social democratic or democratic socialist party, and they are still center left. The only extremists on radio or TV are far right nut jobs like Beck, Savage, and Limbaugh who's ideas coincidentally coincide with those found in the neo nazi parties of Europe.
And calling Thom Hartmann or Reagan Jr extreme is ludicrous. They are beyond tame. Hartmann is a psychologist and a respected author. I don't know if you've ever listened to him, but he's a little dry. Reagan Jr just has daddy issues and feels the need to take a somewhat liberal stance as opposed to his father's.

Note, you have two different questions. "why does the left hate almost everything conservatives love", "why does the left hate America". The presumption is that America is defined as "what conservatives love". It is not. We don't happen to like what conservatives are doing to what we believe America either is, or ought to be.
Liberals could easily say the same about conservatives. Why do conservatives only like SOME of the Constitution? Why do conservatives insist that America be given to the rich? Why do Conservatives insist that America be polluted, don't they love American air and water? Why do Conservatives profess to love America but at the same time dispise it's diversity of opinion, and... frankly, most of it's people?
Why, in fact, do conservatives profess that America is theirs? Liberals love America so much that they wish to continualy make it a better place for ALL of its citizens, Conservatives aren't quite so excited about that sort of thing.
