I've planted numerous seeds I ordered online but once the seed sprouts up above the soil it will only last for about a few days then shrivel up and wither. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR A PLANT TO START TO GROW AND THEN DIE DO TO LACK OF ROOTS? I tried everything could think of using only natural sunlight, using Miracle Gro's Liquid Plant Food, using root hormone. But nothing seems to work for my seeds. I'm using cfl's and the funny thing is my bag seed plant is in it's third week of flower having used nothing special. I'm at a lost for words and have exausted all means so now I'm looking for some help from anyone who can help!!!! Please if anyone has had this problem and over came it tell me what to do. I swear I never thought a plant could even grow past the top of the soil without roots????? Could this be a problem (defect) with its hybrid mother or hybrid father plant. After I tried to do everything I could think of I started thinking that its a genetic problem.

you dont need to feed the plants any nutes for the first 3 or 4 weeks especially a seedling. sounds like over watering to me. look up damp off or dampening off. try a google search. its where the seedling will die right at the soil level soon after it pops the soil.

Right I know but they died before when I used nothing but water, a fan, and cfl's. So I thought maybe they would do better with a little nutes. I even used some of that Shultz Take Root powder still only withers

I tried everything I could think of is this a common thing with hybrids to look for? I just tried Miracle Gro this time but they died before when I wasn't using anything

did you look up damp off. there are products out there that will help prevent this or at least help. i lose a couple of seedlings every year to the same problem, but i also start extra seeds just in case. if i lose 2 out of 30 i dont complain too much.

I suggest you go to lowe's and pick up a jiffy seedstarter kit. It comes with pellets and you just add water to them and drop the seed in. It comes with a humidity dome which locks in moisture and keeps the environment wet. You dont need to water it at all once you wet the pellet initially. Just make sure you have one or two CFL's about 2 or 3 inches above the dome. It's almost fail proof if you just follow instructions and leave it alone for about 3 to 4 days after you set it up.

Good luck!

Also make sure that when you put the seed under the soil you always put the pointed end of the seed face up. The root will grow out of the top and curl down. Then it will push the seed up out of the soil and eventually drop the seed shell off and leaves appear. If you don't do the pointed end up the seed uses lots more energy trying to re-route it's root in the correct position than it would if it's planted properly. If that makes sense.

You know whats crazy I have one from Wal Mart but its too big for my temp grow box. So I haven't used it but I did see a smaller Jiffy Seed Starter Kit that would fit in my box.
