Because that's inclusive, that's democracy

Democracy is having everyone involved in the voting process being able to cast their vote for the candidate they believe reflects their best interests

Why would anyone oppose this?

Are you opposed to direct democracy? 1 person 1 vote?
I absolutely support one-person, one vote when choosing our leaders in the general election. The primary is when the members of the Democratic Party cast votes for the person they want to run to represent the Democratic Party. There is no good reason why non-members of the Democratic Party should be able to participate in selecting the Democratic Party's nominee. I'd prefer that incumbent candidates have served their terms as Democrats too. Bernie, for instance, shouldn't be allowed to run as a Democrat after serving practically the entire time as a Senator while registered Independent.
