stop the paranoia with the choppers.

they only work for really big grows. and with IR blocking technology, the use of the helicopters to spot grows is becoming obsolete.

the future lies with "smart meter" technology, digital readers placed at your house that can alert the power company of any funny business going on.

in a report i saw yesterday the lady said: " the smart meters will help prevent fraud, by alerting the power company of any spikes in electric consumption." sort of like saying that they'll tell you if your neighbor decides to plug in his fridge from your house without telling you.... yeah right, it's to tell the cops if they think something's happening.....

i think the smell is more of an issue than IR......

Agreed. There are a lot of other things growers should be concerned about other than FLIR and police choppers. Of course it is good to ask these types of questions because there is a ton of disinformation out there. FLIR is more of a deterrent than an effective tool at catching indoor growers. Small grows have virtually nothing to worry about when it comes to FLIR. :bigjoint:

I know this may just be adding to the 'Paranoid Brigade' but 300w of CFL's in a closet venting into the main room. Will this be alright to keep me safe from the nerve-Bringin choppers?

Also room has curtains closed 24-7 will that add some suspicion to my room? Whats the best advice on this?

I have one question, I understand how all of this works but what type of helicopter would be scanning homes for grow ops exactly. I have been having Coast Guards flying around at night & I know they have thermal imaging on there helicopters. Could they possibly be scanning homes or would it be a police helicopter?

I agree i spend much more time worrying about snitches on the ground than helicopters in the air!

I would not doubt for a minute that the CG helps out when they can but I don't think they run regular drug interdiction with their assets; it costs a LOT of money to run a J-Hawk helo.

possibly one of the most enlightening threads i've read on riu...

only thing that's still a bit fuzzy in my mind is the capacity that some choppers have to spot outdoor grows as a result of the actual plants " unique heat signature "
might have just been a friend stirring shit.. but i was told that weed will figuratively "glow" when viewed directly with some sort of imaging device..
anyone know a bit more about this?

This is true. It has to do with the reflectance and absorption of various wavelengths of light that is specific to cannabis. Some people also have this ability to distinguish it from background vegetation. If I'm not mistaken, certain types of color blindness helps them and LE agencies recruit officers that can do this.

awhile back i use to keep lots of reptiles in my room cause i was into them alot but not so much anymore no more time on my hands to tend to all of them, i would use lots of heat lamps in my room and it get about 90 degrees or more in the room alone at night sumtimes, mornings id have a fan running all day and never had any suspisions of growing weed, and of course this was bfore i even started growing. Now im keeping my grow area in my closet at like 84-86 degrees and the room itself its at like 80 or less most times.

here is how a police helicopter works...

first it can only read surface temps of your house.... this means they only "see" the outside of the walls or the roof... during the summer it isnt an issue as roof temps can easily hit 150f+... and exterior walls can get quite warm also...

in the cooler months what they look for isnt the heat signature from your lights, but whether you have a room that shows up noticably warmer than other rooms in your house.. this really only affects the top story rooms in a 2 story house as it is hard for them to get a good reading on the side of your house if you live in a neighborhood due to having neighbors...

now lets say they find a room that shows up warmer.. then they might start investingating it by sending the chopper over it at different times to see if there are heat patterns that would be consistant with a grow op... if the room shows up warm on a 12/12 cycle or 18/6 cycle, for example, then they may further investigate...

they will also look for flurs, which are spouts of hot air, leaving a room... your dryer vent creates a IR flur if you were to look at it... more than 1 flur, a flur somewhere where there is obviously going to be no dryer at, or flurs that are at timed intervals from exhaust fans being on timers are also good indications of a grow op...

usually even with all this "evidence" they still need more to get a warrant... so they may send a cop to walk around the premisis to see if they hear, smell, or see anything that may resemble a grow op.. if they do, they proceed from there to try to obtain a search warrant...

now if you are an attic grower it causes a little more of a problem because directly above your lights can easily create a hot spot that would appear on your roof.. it is important to light cool your lights in your attic to keep the hot spots from appearing, have good air circulation to keep the air temp in the attic even, or cover your interior of the attic with IR blocker... this keeps them from being able to read any further in than the blocker is setup...

There have been recent court cases that deemed air space as public property and aerial observation has been deemed public therefore not violating the 4th amendment . Of course, there are others where this is a big controversey. It never occured to me or did I ever even think about how much does my deed protect my rights straight up. Kind of crazy to think we may eventually have to write legal descriptions and have recorded mortgages reflect the distance in the sky your property line goes. Ha being a little sarcastic here. But did any of you think about the property line in the sky?

On the other hand to deter a hot spot on any kind of image. Just wire your whole house to run grow lights as normal lighting if you can afford the light bill...after all some of them are relatively pretty. :)Then your whole house will be a big ball of fire on a police radar.

I've frequently used NVGs that combined both ambient amplification along with IR from helicopters at night (more sophisticated than what law enforcement uses). And not once was I ever able to see any details about what was going on inside of a building/house.

One can only see external surface areas of buildings and their temperature - aka the amount of heat saturating through the walls/roof that makes it to being radiated into outdoor air. There's not much more to it than that. So venting hot air directly outside is very detectable - worry about that. And windows really do usually just appear as dead spots - FLIR won't even see through windows, let alone a roof - so don't worry about that as far as IR goes.

There are other things out there that can see through roofs... but those systems are radar based or use millimeter-wave technology. Fortunately, cost is very prohibitive so law enforcement hasn't been using any other type of imaging technology like that as far as I know.

SableZen - Thank you very much for explaining that, I am also a first time grower and was worried about the copters seeing my grow with the IR or TI but after reading you're post I now fully understand the way these things work. A major weight has been lifted off my shoulders :D

Thanks again.

Happy Growing.

Peace

To all the UK'ers - the only time(last 6 months.lol) choppers have been used to obtain a warrent is due to our asian friends going mental and lighting up full neighbourhoods with 15,000 wats of light(also industrial estates). Good bless the recession. Be safe, be careful
