Just finished the read. Alot of skilled growers on this one but I think the results fell short of the original post"2 pounds in 2x4". You guys are doing the right things by testing and trying different ways. I would think that "EARL" with all his experiments would be able to get to those numbers "If it's possible at all". Alot of great info... Would love to see someone hit those target numbers from RIU. Keep up the research!!!

Just read all 31 pages and love everybodys setup. Great 1st hydro run.

My $.02
I think you could improve your yield by running a cycle timer either 30 sec on 3 off or 1 on 4 off.
I have also seen an improvement from having a seperate res so that the roots just grow in mist. I believe it has to do with the increased amount of oxygen. Don't get me wrong an air stone does provide a decent amount of oxygen but not as much as just growing in the air.

What problem were you having with fox farm? Were you using the grow big made for soil?

I just made two (smaller) of these with 18 sites (6x3) based on your set up. I had extra totes lying around, so that was convenient :). I used an Eco 396 in each tote, but I only have 19 sprayers on each setup. It works great and it has great coverage. I have a NFT-1e timer (1 min on/4 min off) for the pumps. I'm waiting on a few items and some paperwork (MMJ grow) and then I can order seeds. I'm looking forward to seeing how this setup works out though.

way to close even for sea of green... unless your lollipoping tiny ass plants... my friend uses the same rubbermaid tub...55gallons and have like 10 sites in it...unless your doing some serious screening 32 is just way to many and my opinion is that a 55 gallon res is too large... i used 10 or 5 gallon tubs .. save a shit ton on water nutrients and its a pain in the ass to clean a 55 gallon bin. not to mention all the plant matter growing out of the lid... i usually give the plants at least half a foot on my systems and have no crowding issues... cheers

a port is a must to relieve some of the stress associated with this type of grow.

items needed:
1/2" pvc valve
3/4" grommet
1/2" pvc pipe pieces (parts to suit your needs)
screen or other filter for drain pipe

tools:
1" drill bit

drill the hole as close to the bottom as possible (on flat surface only). work grommet into hole. be sure to press inside of grommet to ensure contact with edge of hole. wet the tip of a 3-4 inch piece of pvc and carefully work through hole. wrap the outer tip with plumbers tape and insert into valve. use elbows and other parts on inside to get your tip low (if you are using an in-line pump to draw fluids out), and to fashion an appropriate exit from the valve to suit your needs. i made a hose to connect to an in-line pump using other nylon parts from the hardware store. blessings!

i like it thats all, i could use just neoprene, but i think hydroton allows a little more le-way, like if i wanted to change this system to a drip, or a dwc, or bubbleponnic. all of which are suitable in this unit. plus, i'm putting this grow to gether almost all diy for newbs, when i get it goin i will post it. here is a few pics to start with

this is from about a week ago, i am diy-ing a cool tube, i have all referbished fans, the light is referbished, i am doing a diy mother bucket and diy, bubble cloner/veger. i will have diy co2, i will be visqueening the whole closet off, with the mother bucket on the side of this unit with a reflective partition.

from there i will run the crop, and then from there make it better, eventually bigger, and more high tech.

a complete newb guide.......

thats whats up LB. that woulda solved my headroom/need-for-a-2nd-res probs. what would be wrong wit' a broke/cheap MFer usin frozen bottles in th controller bucket?

good shit!

off topic, visited 1 of my outside sites today. fuckin deer got me for 8 out of 9. bitches! upgrading my repel game. suggestions besides coyote urine, human piss, deer stop (or whatever the spray is)? used blood meal and human piss last year, same spot, to get rid of gangs of 'em. didn't use piss this year cuz i was convinced it was the blood meal. i only used 1 app of piss (sprayed boundary) last year, plus most say it does not work unless you continue to apply or use piss bottles with holes and keep filling.
Props on the thread Dr G its been a big help! I had the same problem with deer and found a great solution. I know its just a tad bit late in the season but it might help ya next season.
All you need is some fishing line and if you dont have any trees or bushes right around your plot bring some posts/stakes/sticks etc.
Your gonna run the fishing line around the perimeter of your garden, using trees/bushes to secure the line and keep it tight as you go. You pretty much weave and tie it into the foliage and keep it tight and it a consistent height.
The first line you run at about knee high, directly above you run the second line about chest high.
The third line you run about a little higher, just enough that a deer can go under it. This line will run the same path as the first two but about 2 feet further out from the garden. So basically your just outlining the path of the first two lines and keeping a consistent 2 foot distance from them.
This line is important! A deer can see a normal fence and will jump right over it. A deers poor eyesight prevents them from seeing the fishing line at all! When they attempt to enter your garden they feel the pressure against their chest/neck area but they cant see anything which confuses them. When they try to go under it the knee high line gets em again! Now if they get really determined and try to jump over the invisible line, boom! The tallest line trips em up or clothes lines em! Then they take off runnin and stay the hell away from your patch!!!!!
Its really simple and it works, I lost 2 out of 25 using hair, urine, soap, blah blah:wall:. Once I put up the fishing line I didnt see another deer track inside the perimeter! I did see some tracks approaching the patch then dead stopping at the fishing line! (which I had to tighten back up a few times after the deer tried their hardest ta walk thru)
Hopefully this helps ya out next season man, thanks again for the thread Im bout mid way thru my build now. It will be up and running soon, pics of it with my mini chocolope cut coming soon to a thread near you!
PEACE

Weird request Drgreen, but could you log into your photobucket account so we can see the pics on your first page lol
It says you have been inactive for 90 days :-P

Gracias for the rep Doc I appreciate it buddy, think thats my first one! Youll be amazed at how good that damn fishing line keeps those bambi bastards out! Cheap as hell too man!
Got a question for ya about my 32 site aero in progress. My closet is seperated into 2 sections top and bottom, top is 2x4x5 and houses my tent where I flower and the bottom houses the clothes that cover my ass! About midway thru the build it dawned on me that 45 gallons of water weighs about 350 lbs and all that weight is gonna be on a shelf 3 feet off the ground...
So, do we need ta fill these up pretty full, do you have a water level you usually fill to or what??? Id def be more comfortable with 20 gallons on a shelf than 45 ya know!
I was also thinkin I could modify the design to have a seperate res that would sit on the ground but Im not sure how well the pump would work if it had to constantly lift water 3 feet up all damn day!
Any input would be greatly appreciated Doc or anybody thats runnin one of these.

im not the doc, but i have one of these systems.

as for water/nutrient level you need your water /nute level at least above the intake on your water pump. and still you should go 2 inches minimum above that level.

your plants when they get bigger are gonna use alot of the water/nutes. so if your shelf can hold it then put as much as you can as long as your water/nute line is below your sprayer heads.

as for your pump, if you are going to use a seperate rez, thats 3 feet lower you are gonna lose alot of pressure. one of my buddies went and got a new sump pump from lowes to do 4 feet. they have a chart that comes with them that lets you know how much pressure you are losing per foot of elevation
