DIY with Quantum Boards

So I just plugged my 135W V2 board in to a watt meter for the first time. Ordered it as HLG DIY kit in summer 2018 I think and running since then with no probs.

Somehow my HLG120H-54A is pulling 171W from the wall? I knew they could do upwards of 150W but didnt think 170 was even possible.

Im still dialing in the ppfd using a lux app and the HLG calculator but at the moment am slightly confused/concerned. Should I dim it down to protect the board itself or is it ok like this?

Ive only ever adjusted the IO to dim it btw. Right now its turned up to the max. It shows 117.7V and 1.46A which seems correct so I dont think I should touch the VO.

Please advise!

Just an update on my first HLG 320w Rspec harvest. Well over 1000 grams wet. Should net me a pound or better which will put me in the the 1.5-2g per watt area. Some of the prettiest and most dense flower I’ve ever grown. Few pics I grabbed while I was trimming.
Have the same thing and its produced super dense, super LOUD beautiful flowers. Had (2) 600W viparspectras in a 2x4 and they actually did pretty good for what they were. Flowers looked good but now that I have this light, it's freaking night and day, BIG difference. I have it set at like 82% with the knob at the top and I checked at the wall with an amp meter.

Think it's like 35W/ft2 or slightly less and height is about 18"-24" from tops of plants depending on the plant. Tried placing them on top of small pots in order to get more light and the plants didn't like it, major calcium/mag issues within a matter of two days or so. Super impressed with this thing so far, well worth the money, well worth it.

I had crazy calmag problems myself with this light. Was giving them almost triple the bottles recommendation and it would still show signs here and there lol. No biggy though really. Here’s some of my driver jarred up.

Also just found a source in SoCal for 300mmx1000mm anodized heatsink extrusions for $40 each! US based company but mfg is in Istanbul so it takes 3 weeks to arrive. This will let me mount 4 qb288 boards vertically (90 degrees from HLG slate design). Now I just need to find someone to thread the m3 hole pattern. Suggestions appreciated.

That driver should be able to do about 150w at board level, maybe even more with Vo adjusted all the way up. But you probably dont need Vo adjusted that high, it will output up to 60V which you dont need and will increse driver consumption. Try this:
Up Io to max.
Carefully adjust down Vo until you see the very first incling of drop in light levels. You may have to play with it a bit back and forwards. Or much better, do the adjustments with a multimeter attached to the dc side, you stop when amps start going down. This will ensure youre not losing power to having too much voltage going to your board.



The voltage and current from your killawatt is on the ac side. It will allways be higher than board watts due to efficiency of ac-dc conversion. On 117V (your ac voltage) this conversion may be worse than 240V. Also many killawatts arent super exact. Id say your within spec probably.
If you want better values of what to expect from your driver go to meanwells web and instead datasheet doenload report. Usually values are a bit higher than datasheet.

Tapping threads is cake. You don't need to pay someone

can get a bit with drill tip and then proper thread tap size on the same bit. I don't know how well they work.
Or just buy the screws you wanna use, buy a lot of them, aluminum is soft enough that you can slowly work the threads into the hole you drill, it just needs to be wide enough. Only use a screw once or twice to make the threads though before throwing it out. They start to get weak. I've done it plenty of times.
But if you just wanna be safe, just buy the drill and tap and do it. Its not difficult.
Get some 3in1 oil.

Yeah, I've seen people who claim that there is no correlation between LEDs and Cal-Mag deficiencies but I used to use HPS and I NEVER had any such issues. I've encountered it consistently under LEDs but I also doubled up on the dosage like you did. In the end it does't make a tremendous difference but it's definitely consistent. This light is really nice though, for real. A little deceiving because the flowers look smaller in contrast to previous seasons until you feel them. They are SO dense that they actually weigh much more while making the harvest quick.

For tapping or drilling aluminum wd-40 works as good / better than oil. Very easy to drill and tap with a cordless drill.

I don't think he does get round to that bit, he just stopped logging on. Mind you he could be back, he often goes awol for a long period.
He was known as the biggest LED troll , funny thing though outside of LED threads he was alright, even saw him recommend LEDs a few times.
Think he got burned by blurple tech years ago and never got over it.

Im a terrible judge of people though, I think 99.8% of people are great. bongsmilie

Don't think he was being a jerk, he is trying to save you from shorting out your light and maybe burning your home down! SAFETY should always be your number one concern when doing DIY!


Being a jerk isn't a good way to get a point across.

Sound more like you didn't want to hear you made a mistake.... there was nothing wrong with his response. And people shouldn't be anything less than blunt when trying to help someone prevent a potentially dangerous situation. But hey, it's your home and family at risk so have it your way!


I never said you made shit up what I took offence to is the way to chose to say it.

What would everyone’s opinion be for a flower light set up. This is all for a 4x4x8 tent.

Option 1.
6 x qb288 3000k on 3 separate 240w hlg-240h-48b w/ 4 x qb11 cree 660 strips on a hlg-80h-700b

Option 2.

6 x qb288 3000k w/ Cree 660 +uv and ir on 3 separate hlg-240h-48b drivers

I have an order pending w/ KB for option one but I’m waiting on the dimmable driver for the strips. Contemplating changing it to the V4 boards. Thoughts? $300 CAD difference in price between the two options. I thought the 660 strips would be a good idea due to being able to keep the crees off for the first week of flower to reduce stretching. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Theyll all work, but I'm pretty sure the newer KB boards have switches on them to turn off individual channels. I'd just get 2 sets of the second option. That way you get your 660 reds. But, you don't need no fuckin 720watts in a 4X4.

Also, what brand tent do you have that actually has an 8 foot heighth? Gorilla?

The tent is made by Fusion. Pretty much copies of Gorilla grow tents without their expensive hand printed gorilla decals. The same 1680d canvas with the same layout. The actual height is 7 foot 11 inches but close enough. They also come with 1 foot extensions just like gorilla to take it from 6’11 to 7’11. Check them out, they’re half the price of gorillas. I love mine.
