A made some computation with DIY software.
I use :
- 4 LR-CP7P drive 700mA => 108.5 lm each Pc=1.73W
- 12 XTE White 2200K CCT drive 700mA => 167 lm each Pc=2.13W
- 2 XTE White 2600K-3700K drive 700mA => 203 lm each Pc=2.13W
-6 XTE White 5000K-8000K drive 700mA => 217 lm each Pc=2.13W

Compute the radiometric power from datasheet curve and :

Radiant flux = 13 W and 62.3 umol/s
Total Pc = 49.5W + Driver (93%) + Power Supply (90%) = 60W

Efficiency = 21.66%
For better explanation :

I try to compare ASTIR setup to other setup.
As ASTIR use Edison led or same led design and as I don't find the datasheet of these leds, I use Cree XTE and Oslon SSL150 leds data.

ASTIR Panel using website data http://astirgrows.com/
- 2 CW
- 4 NW
- 16 WW
- 2 Red 630nm
All drive at 350 mA

So to compute this setup, I use (Worst setup Tj = 85°c)
- 2 Cree XLampXTE White 5000K-8300K CCT (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.85V > 130 lm)
- 4 Cree XLampXTE White 2600K_3700K (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.85V > 122 lm)
- 16 Cree XLampXTE White 2200K CCT (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.85V > 100 lm)
- 2 Oslon SSL150 LR-CPDP (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.25V > 33.55 lm)

So, with my little soft and the Relative Radiant Power of these leds, I compute from lumens value, the radiant power (Watt) and the umol qty so:
- 2 Cree XLampXTE White 5000K-8300K CCT (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.85V > 130 lm) => 2x [ 0.403 W & 1.78 umol ] = 0.806 W & 3.56 umol
- 4 Cree XLampXTE White 2600K_3700K (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.85V > 122 lm) => 4x [ 0.334 W & 1.6 umol ] = 1.336 W & 6.4 umol
- 16 Cree XLampXTE White 2200K CCT (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.85V > 100 lm) => 16x [ 0.276 W & 1.36 umol ] = 4.416 W & 21.76 umol
- 2 Oslon SSL150 LR-CPDP (Tj 85° - 350 mA / 2.25V > 33.55 lm) => 2x [ 0.179 W & 0.94 umol ] = 0.358 W & 1.88 umol

Total: 6.93 W & 33.6 umol
Power consumption: 22 x 0.9975 W + 2 x 0.7875 W = 23.52 W + Driver (93%) + Power Supply (90%) = 28.1 W

So the global efficiency is =24.6%

If I use this classification :
  • UV : 300 to 399 nm > 0 W & 0 umol > 0%
  • Blue : 400 to 499 nm > 0.85 W & 3.2195 umol > 12.27% W & 9.6% umol
  • Green : 500 to 599 nm > 3.1891 W & 14.9602 umol > 46.01% W & 44.59% umol
  • Red : 600 to 699 nm > 2.7671 W & 14.6295 umol > 39.93% W & 43.6% umol
  • Far-Red : 700 to 750 nm > 0.1239 W & 0.7443 umol > 1.79% W & 2.22% umol

Here the Radiation Chart of this setup (X-axis = nm & Y-Axis = Watt)

Remember, it is the worst setup with Tj = 85°C, lower Tj made better value for Red led and few improve for white led. For Tj = 50°C the chart is :

With Total: 7.6388 W & 37.0472 umol. Total Power Consumption = 28.06 W so Efficiency = 27.22%

  • UV : 300 to 399 nm > 0 W & 0 umol > 0%
  • Blue : 400 to 499 nm > 0.9185 W & 3.4770 umol > 12.02% W & 9.39% umol
  • Green : 500 to 599 nm > 3.447 W & 16.1708 umol > 45.12% W & 43.65% umol
  • Red : 600 to 699 nm > 3.1395 W & 16.5956 umol > 41.1% W & 44.8% umol
  • Far-Red : 700 to 750 nm > 0.1338 W & 0.8038 umol > 1.75% W & 2.17% umol

I will compute the same setup only with OSLON SSL 150 or 80 leds (White and color).

For the next setup, I will use:
- 2 Oslon SSL 80 LCW CR7P-PC (Tj 50° - 350 mA / 3.0V > 137 lm) = 0.840 W & 3.9 umol
- 4 Oslon SSL 80 LCW CR7P-EC (Tj 50° - 350 mA / 3.0V > 118.58 lm) = 1.548 W & 7.6 umol
- 16 Oslon SSL 80 LCW CR7P-CC (Tj 50° - 350 mA / 3.0V > 95.06 lm) = 5.633 W & 27.92 umol
- 2 Oslon SSL 80 LR-CP7P (Tj 50° - 350 mA / 2.20V > 51.85 lm) = 0.554 W & 2.92 umol

Total: 8.5756 W & 42.34 umol
Power consumption: 22 x 1.05 W + 2 x 0.77 W = 24.64 W + Driver (93%) + Power Supply (90%) = 29.44 W

So the global efficiency is = 29.12%


  • UV : 300 to 399 nm > 0 W & 0 umol > 0.15% W & 0.10% umol
  • Blue : 400 to 499 nm > 0.9185 W & 3.4770 umol > 14% W & 10.95% umol
  • Green : 500 to 599 nm > 3.447 W & 16.1708 umol > 34.87% W & 32.79% umol
  • Red : 600 to 699 nm > 3.1395 W & 16.5956 umol > 45.03% W & 48.85% umol
  • Far-Red : 700 to 750 nm > 0.1338 W & 0.8038 umol > 5.95% W & 7.33% umol

And just for fun, I analyzed the Area 51 SGS-160 light.

I made some assumption :
The SGS-160 is made with 48 Cree XPG Outdoor ( 3700K-5000K) and 24 Cree XPE Red.
As I can easily find these leds with top group :
​I used for XPE red P3 group > 73.9 lumens at 350 mA & for XPG 3700K-5300K R4 group > 130 lumens at 350mA.

Tj=50°C

So:
24 XPE Red : 24 x [ Vf=2.31 @ 700mA ] & 24 x [ 0.51 W & 2.65 umol/s ] >>>> 38.808 W & 12.24 Optical Watt - 63.6 umol/s
48 XPG Outdoor : 48 x [ Vf=3.05 @ 700mA ] & 48 x [ 0.662 W & 3.08 umol/s ] >>>> 102.48 W & 31.776 Optical Watt - 147.84 umol/s

Total:
Power consumption = (38.808 + 102.48 ) + Driver (93%) + Power Supply (90%) = 168.893 W
Optical Power Output = (44 W - 211.44 umol/s) minus 10% for reflector or lens loose = 39.6 W - 190.3 umol/s
Efficiency = 23.44%


  • UV : 300 to 399 nm > 0 W & 0 umol/s > 0.15% W & 0.10% umol/s
  • Blue : 400 to 499 nm > 7.94 W & 30.2014 umol/s > 18.04% W & 14.27% umol/s

Power consumption = 27.1 Watt
Optical Output = (8.5975 W & 41.4172 umol/s) minus 10% for reflector or lens loose = 7.737 W - 37.27 umol/s
Efficiency = 28.55%

I analyzed the Hans Grow Led Light http://www.bonsaihero.com/ledgrow-led-panel-80-watt.html and synthetised all the computation.

- Astir Design with Cree and Oslon leds
- Astir Design with only Oslon SSL 80 leds
- Area 51 SGS-160
- Hans Led Panel

For these four design a made charts to compare them.
I do not think that compare Hans Design to the others is interesting cause a cannot normalized Hans Panel with Astir panel.
Never mind, I do it.

It's great to see you analyzing all this. Turns out the Hans panel is just as efficient as Cree CXA or Bridgelux Vero COBs that also give about 1.8 umol/s/W.

I would like to ask if you could compare the LER values that you have calculated with the one that I have, so as to estimate the margin of error - thanks.

Hmm that deviates a bit too much for some, like the XPE red. Can you post your LER values? (Luminous Efficacy of Radiation). The LER value is purely is property of the spectrum's shape and the rest follows from it, so it would be easiest to compare the LER values.

How do you digitize the spectrum and what resolution do you use for the calculations?

With your XP-E red data I get a LER of 204 compared to 201 with my data. Reasonably close given that it has been reverse engineered from a graph. The LER values (or its reciprocal) must already be somewhere in your speadsheet. For example when computing the efficiency = efficacy/LER.
