Air Pots

I have been using air pots for a while now. I have both 1.5 gallon and 3.4 gallon pots right now, and soon I will be getting the 5 gallon pots. I think they are really fantastic and am surprised that more shops don't have them, and more people aren't using them. I have even meet with resistance to the idea of them from a few other soil growers I know.

Before I switched to the airpots, I used pretty standard 5 gal round pots. I seem to get about the same size plant from a 3.4 gal air pot, as a 5 gal traditional pot. In my last grow I used a few of my old 5 gal pots to see how they would compare, and both pots yielded approximately the same size plant. That means for 12 plants using the 3.4 gal air pot, I use 19.2 gallons LESS of soil!

Larger plant smaller pot is due to the way roots grow in these pots. Because of the holes all around the pot more air gets into the soil, it also gives a place for the roots to grow instead of circling the walls of the pot. The roots grow out the holes, and an effect called air pruning takes place. Just like when you top a plant and it grows more shoots, when the root grows out of the soil, the tip will get "air pruned" causing the root to grow a series of root hairs all along the root, back to the main stalk.

They are super easy to transplant since the whole pot unrolls. Easy to water since you can either dunk them or just top water. Really great for organic grows since you get so much more air in the soil for healthy microbe activity. They do cost quite a bit more that traditional pots, but considering that you can grow a bigger plant in a smaller pot, they will pay for themselves in just a few grows with the money saved on soil.
Is anyone else out there using air pots? Please share your experience if you are.
