A Newbies First Grow

Thinking of placing a vertical divider, like a simple tarp, between my babies and the corn that stands directly in front of them. Would do this at flowering, so it would not impact plant growth in any way. I want to ensure nosey neighbors and kids don't come after my crops when they start to stink.

I can't wait for that smell!!

Lol wish you could smell mine! When I'm about 100 ft away even it smells like a skunk sprayed that whole area. Kicks you in the nose a bit AND I JUST LOVE IT!

I have had two weeks of amazing growth since I last posted pictures on July 4th.

Corn has done what corn does in Wisconsin in heat. Tomatoes had an issue that I had to resolve via pruning. Currently waiting on apprx. 30 romas to vine ripen. Wife makes an amazing Bolognese sauce! I put netting over my strawberries to keep birds and rabbits away, and it is working perfectly. Carrots are rocking, probably planted too many, but my toddler daughter will crush them. Sweet peas, cucumbers and beans are all on schedule. Broccoli was a huge fail from the start!

The babies are happy and right on schedule. I'm just happy they are healthy and structurally strong. They have taken to the string of long, hot days nicely, and have easily doubled in 15 days. No nutrients or additives. Just Wisconsin soil, Lake Michigan water (the best!!), and love.

Now, patience until light/dark ratios trigger flowering. SE Wisconsin is losing about 1.5 minutes per day of sun now. By July 31 we will be close to the magic 14.5 hrs sunlight to hopefully start some magic!

Here are some pics:

My garden. My first attempt at multiple crop production, all to support my grow operation.

My babies. Praying for 2 to be sexy females, but I'll take one. Just feel blessed that they are all so healthy on their own!

Please feel free to offer up any feedback. I am quite proud of my first attempt, regardless of what it may bring in October.

Looking good. It's pretty obvious from your veggie garden that you're not a newbie to gardening. I'm sure you'll have no problem seeing this through to a successful harvest.

Just watch out for those budworms come flowering time. Imagine tomato hornworms, but you don't know they're there until a lot of damage is done. Being proactive is key...weekly BT sprays and egg hunting have been key for me.

Edit: I should've said daily egg hunting, regarding budworms.

Good luck with the remainder of the season.

And this is currently what is giving me a little woody and making me smack my wife's ass like we are in high school again.

I am so on tilt looking for pistils, and this might just be remnants from a topping cut heal spot right there, so I can't completely confirm. I am still not expecting to see any clear cut sign of gender until the 31st, earliest.

I just keep telling myself....patience, Irish lad, patience.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I will do some research on it and be prepared to deal.

I am almost to the point of being 100% certain this is a male, and ripping it out so I am not even thinking about it anymore.

Sucks, because this is the one I really wanted to be my main chick.

Looking for input before I make the final decision...

That's a male. See the way it's got a claw-like thing going on? Let it go for a bit though, you'll see the pollen sacks begin to emerge and take on structure.

The claw was the give away for me!! Thanks for confirming. Bittersweet, but still a learning experience. Confirmed the female yesterday, so not all is lost. But damn, that was my first seed in the soil, so I had high hopes.

I hesitate to let it linger too long. How long would you estimate before I risk pollination?

I can't give an estimate on a timeframe for pollination risk, but you definitely have some time. The pollen sacks need to form and mature. Just for fun, I'd say keep him around for a minute just so you can watch the progression. As long as you check daily, you shouldn't get caught with your pants down and pollen all over your girls.

I was swearing up and down that some plants I had were female, recently, until the pollen sacks started showing and kicked me right out of denial.

Now that I have confirmed my 2 ladies, and they are in preflower, I am entertaining the idea of adding some blooming nutrients to aid in flowering and bud production. This is outside of my knowledge base, so I am looking for some suggestions.

My 2 plants are 4ft and 3ft. Soil and water have never been an issue in my garden, as Lake Michigan has taken care of that for me. I just want to optimize my flower and bud development. So nothing complicated. Perhaps a Lowes run type product??

Looking to start Tiger Bloom for my two girls. Want to really get them nice and thick for buds. Plan on adding Big Bloom shortly after. This is a new thing for me, so I was planning on using a 2tsp:gal ratio to start and go up as needed. I know it is a between regular watering thing, but I am trying to determine how much to apply per plant. A gallon each seems like a lot, so I am thinking .25gal per plant to start. Ideas or suggestions?

Latest round of pics now that 48 hours of shit weather is over. Fed my two girls last night for the first time. Went about 1/2 on ratio to make sure they can take the nutes. I am feeling really good about my first grow so far. I think the weather and the great soil here have really been on my side thus far. These pics have me giddy. Tons of new growth as my girls stretch out!
