Starting with Aerogarden (my first grow, advice appreciated)

The only water I have access to is very poor quality, and I've been meaning to go get some better water but i'm too lazy. I just pop in 1 nute tablet every week for nutes, and i'm thinking about getting some yeast to make some CO2.

Yea i know, i can get some distilled water for free... I just gotta go bottle it up and bring it home. I never think to do it...plus I go thru probably a gallon every 2-3 days in the AG it seems like.

Okay, i just browse every AG thred on this site... literally... and by the looks of most, im doing perrty good for where im at.

Questions:

Im at 23 days, growth has slowed down for some reason. The two biggest plants are both leaning at an angle, and the roots are creeping out the top of the sponge. BIG PROBLEM? or is it controllable?

When should i induce flowering? Ive noticed a few of yall started at 4 weeks, which is right round corner from me... by the fourth week, i should be a good 8-10 inches tall on the biggest plants.

Heres the link to my thread... Any advice would be a godsend right now.. thanks

Week 9 pics here right on time. :hump:
That is 9 weeks from seed, been flowering now for about a month....errr a month since I saw my first pistil, about 5-6 weeks since I went 12/12.

Last week I cleaned the rez, and my little runt started getting bad looking so i added an airstone this week...maybe it will help. As for the big girl, she's looking good but the bud on top isn't as big as i wish it was. Some of the buds a few nodes down are bigger and fatter. I'm definately gonna top next time.

Alright, I'm noticing a problem with the AG nutes. There seems to be some kind of buffer in the solution. I pH'ed the water the other day and noticed it was higher than usual...in fact way too high. So I added some pH down, and it really didn't seem to have an effect. I added a little bit more and I think I may have added too much or something. My pH is reading about 5.8 now, which should be good, but one leaf at the top of my big plant started turning orange today. I'm assuming it's b/c of the acid...I just noticed today right before the lights went out. I'l probably change the water tomorrow to be safe.

Alright guys, here are pics of them now, 10 weeks from seed. Yesterday I didn't have my camera, so I'm a day late on my update. If you've been following me, last week I added too much pH down like an idiot. A couple of leaves near the top cola turned orange as a result, but I flushed just in time to prevent any more damage. My little runt's fan leaves are all turning a nasty brown at the bottom, but the top nug looks nice. I'm thinking about pruning both plants, but I want to be extra careful and do it right. So far I've just been letting the plants drop leaves on their own, and I'm using the "leafing" technique to give more lights to the buds as opposed to pruning. Anyways, it's been about 1.5 months flowering, and to me it only looks half way done (if even that far). The humidity in the room is getting way too high (50%), and the temp is way up there too (85+ degrees). I've been ventilating a lot to keep the temp/humidity down, but my room definately needs more circulation. I can tell they are under heat and humidity stress. Other than those issues, everything looks good.

Looking very nice!

Here's some advice....

Next time at an early age... cut several levels of the lowest nodes off.....and later on do this some more...

The reason is because the lower nodes are like suckers and they'll suck energy away from the top of the plant....

This might help promote better buds at the top half of the plant...

Just an idea...

Also if I was you I'd try to get some lights right up around surrounding that big tall lady...

I dunno might help...

Congrats good luck you don't have too much longer!

Peace

Thx Tek, I did consider cutting the lower nodes, but I figured I'd let it do it's own thing since this is only round 1. I chopped 3 males down at the beggining of 12/12 and kind of got discouraged, so I just let the females shed leaves naturally to be careful not to cause hermies. Next time I plan to prune and top the plants. And as for lighting, I got 8 CFL's right above that tall lady. They are on one fixture, which means they aren't really maximizing surface area around the plant, but it's a ton of light. I'm afraid to add more, b/c the temp is so freakin high.

cool...

When you prune or cut off fan leaves I wouldn't do it much...it's easy to end up losing control and the next thing you know your plant is bare...

Plus I think the nodes get a lot of energy from the fan leaf they come from...

But cool sounds good...

Yea I know what you mean, I'm very hesitant to cut anything on these plants. Here's a pic of my lights: Orange for flower, blue for veg. Pretty much copied Dave's idea. It would have worked well for flowering like 2-4 plants, but you get what you get.

I just noticed I got all those blue ones clustered together. I just went and switched em around so the orange ones are all over that top cola.

I use the fox farm soil ferts for my plants in soil, but I haven't bought any hydro nutes yet. First, make sure you got the hydroponic nutrients, because they make nutes for for both. Use the "grow big" for vegging the plants, and buy the "big bloom" and use that one for flowering. You can switch to 12/12 whenever you feel like it, but keep in mind, if you wait longer than 3 weeks, you probably will need extra lighting. I flowered at 3.5 weeks, and I have like 2-3 feet on my tall lady. Oh yea, don't use the 2 AG tablets to start. I have found (along with other AG users) that using no nutes, just water ONLY for the first two weeks works best. Then add your "grow big." You can find a link on the fox farms website for how much to use. My advice would be to use half of what they recommend at the beggining, and work your way up to full strength doses.
