Oregon Rec. Grow

Thanks Slow Drawl, it was a year full of learning. I took lessons from a single grow (last years) and applied them to this second one, but I didn't take into account random luck. I see what I could have/should have done differently, and in the end, we'll have more than enough to take us to my next indoor winter grow. So it's all good.

Here's what the 600 looks like in the hoop house this morning.

When I read up on pollenating, it said that after the pollen takes (48-72 hours), the stigmas will darken and shrivel up since the pollenated buds no longer need to attract pollen, and then they focus their energy on developing the seeds. I did not see any change at all, so assuming it didn't take a week or two later I pulled most of the marker tape off the branches.

Not the case. As I trim I'm finding good looking seeds on one branch on each plant. So far I have LSD x Bruce Banner #3, LSD x Mystery, and LSD x Jillybean. I vaguely remember cutting and tossing the branch from the LSD x GG#4 because it had issues, so we lost that one (unless it survives composting... in which case the will randomly show up in the garden next year). And the LSD x LSD branch (unknowingly at the time) went into the freezer for hash, so that one is probably shot too. Even so, I guess I'm set for seeds for next year.

Today's big inspection of the LSD in the hoop house (under the 600) I see its getting covered with PM, so it's coming down tomorrow. I had a fan running while the light was on, but I shut it off today to try and let some warmth build up, maybe it will dry the plant out a bit and slow the spread down? Not sure. Looks like I'll hash the entire plant, so even if only half the trichomes are mature, at least we won't be burning through all that leaf just to get to them.

Similar story here: I got a couple of seeds off the bagseed plant, probably less than a dozen. I just started doing the final trim before jarring with the CBC and a) she is smelling nice and stinky and b) I've found a lot of seeds as well. More like 40 so far, with a long way to go. I'm assuming Donkey Kong is the father for these seeds as well; I'm pretty sure I'm the only one growing in the neighborhood. And, I haven't even busted into the branches that were pollinated on purpose, of either plant. I let those branches stay on the mother plant as long as possible.

If you cutting today, the weather should cooperate...

Hey guys, the grower formerly known as Larry {the} Gardener here. I've been having to make those same life and death decisions with the 2 BST2's and the BST1 in my FP patch. Bud worms led to bud rot on the 2 BST2's, and there was some PM on the BST1 early on. I've taken all of BST2 {Rotten Stinking Bastard}, about half of BST2 {Peach} and a few buds off the BST1 {Hurricane Head}. I check on them every three or four days, and have been taking buds every time I go. Sucks to cut early, but I have about enough to get through the year off the BST's with none of my seeds ready yet.

It does suck, but all these were Bag Seed Testers, so I was able to talk myself into not getting too worked up about it. Then a couple three days ago I saw a brown tipped bud on the young CP1 in the BP patch. I looked the plant over good, and didn't see any worms. But later that night at the camp, a small worm crawled out of as I was trimming the dead part from the green. It will be Monday at the earliest before I can get back there. Up until now my seeds haven't had any of the PM or worm problems of the BST's. This will make the next few weeks a bitch if the rest of them are affected too. I think this is just a bad year for worms. Driving through the end of the hayfield we planted in longleaf pines, I saw the weeds wrapped up with worms. They are thick in the oak trees as well.

Have any of you had worm problems with a Spring crop? I'm hoping to get a big part of my crop done by March 15th next year. I will still do some full seasons, but I won't be starting as early as I did this year.

Youre right, the bud worms are generally laid by late summer/early fall moths, at least in my experience... never had a bud work on spring light dep.
Holy shit, just did a marathon harvest of 24 monster plants... tired... eh. A kinda dinky, but nice 'n colorful yield from this stinker... it is so smelly:)20160915_163042.jpg

Batten down, PNW, storm clouds a brewing!

Quoting from the WxCafe: "Three powerful WIND and heavy rain storms are scheduled to strike the PNW in the next few days. BE PREPARED, patron! The Nat'l Wx Service will be providing updates as the series of storms approach our region of the country."

If any girls are still out side; we-l-l-l, he's just sayin!

Thanks I waited to the last minute and I've cut the last of my crop. I cut most about 10 days ago and left some buds to see what would happen. After 10 days, the buds look a little frostier but still no amber. On the other hand, a more bud rot. I will say that Mastodon from Oregon Green Seed hung in there out in the open rain and all. But its time to get everybody inside.

I'm not complaining, though. Buds were plentiful, sticky and stinky. I'm still trimming what I pulled 10 days ago. Pictures from the first chop:

Some of the harvest, 3 days in trimming. I was pretty slow at first, but am picking up the pace.

As a fan of clothes pins, I'm impressed! As a fan of bud: very impressed! Nice to get the Mastodon feedback.
Nice harvest FD looks like your set for the year...trimming arrgghh I find the more I trim the bushier the buds look. It's not an old mans game this trimming business.
So You and Jetson have grown Mastodon...I've been wondering what the buzz is like?

Seattle eastside here. Pulled everything into the garage last night ahead of the storm. 5 I put in my grow room and the other 10 are in the garage. Double edged sword for me; I have only harvested some broken limbs and some damaged buds so far. With the rain and wind storms I guess ill camp out and trim in the garage and use the left over to build an ark if needed lol.WP_20161012_19_42_08_Pro.jpg WP_20161009_16_13_19_Pro.jpg

One last grow report and I'll move on to the initial results from trying the stuff. I didn't spray anything on my plants this year. I've been an organic gardener for decades and my garden usually is pest free except for cabbage worms and leafminers. Those I learned to control by growing chard as a trap crop. I let the chard go to seed one year and always have volunteers growing in the garden. Those seem to get attention from butterflies and leafminer maggots. When I see a lot of pests on the chard, I cut it and throw it in the trash. Whether that's the reason why I had no bud worms or just got lucky or the variety of weed was resistant, I don't know. Other than small patches of bud rot, especially on just one plant and especially on the stuff left to hang out in the rain, my crop came in practically pest free. No powdery mildew anywhere.

I've only sampled the resin from trimming scissors. I'm a lightweight, so it doesn't take much when I'm smoking the ~16%-22% stuff from the dispensary. For me, one hit of the Mastodon scissors resin and I'm done for the evening. The buzz is what people usually say about Indica. Comfortable happy and restful kind of high. One evening, I probably did more than normal, closed my eyes and saw very colorful geometric shapes, quite entertaining. For myself, I find sleep is not as good if I smoke very late in the evening but that's true for all weed.

I've never before made cannaoil but my wife, who doesn't smoke, was interested in trying. We made a batch of coco oil (1 oz trim:1 lb oil) using fairly standard oil:water extraction method. A batch of cookies with roughly 1/3 tsp oil per cookie has been nice. I warned SO to be careful but we had no idea what was "just a little". Anyway, she ate two cookies and a few hours later it became clear she had had too much. Dizzy, chills, nausea, light sensitivity, the works. The next morning, OK but bit sheepish. We now find half a cookie gives a nice pleasant uplifting buzz. And we respect the cookie!

There is still much to do. I still haven't finished trimming my first pull 10 days ago. The second pull yesterday is smaller but still substantial. I have a lot more bud hanging on clothespins at various states of dry and a lot more left to trim.. The first buds that I trimmed are almost ready to go into jars. Once I've finished a 30-day or so cure, I'll give a final smoke report.

OOF! All those pots! Makes my back tired just looking at the photo but wow, what a nice garden you have. Bud photo was a money shot for sure.

Learning about edibles takes discipline. Better to waste 60-90 minutes waiting for something to happen and have little or nothing happen, than spend several hours being various degrees of uncomfortable. I only eat, can't smoke, so this process is all I've got. Every new batch I make, I have to start slow and build my way up. I don't make them as snacks, I'll make regular brownies if I just want a treat. They are a THC delivery method, so I figure out the right size piece, and I'm good to go. I tend to make my butter/oil strong, I think the last batch was 4.75oz of top shelf dried bud in 1lb of butter. A little goes a long way.

It is interesting how physical the response to "too much" was for your wife. When I have too much, it's all about the mental side, getting to a place where I have trouble finishing thoughts, or expressing myself verbally. I suppose one could say, 'negotiating reality', or navigating normal conversation becomes a challenge, which I don't find to be a comfortable place to be. Part of that might be because 90% of the growing I do (at my patients request) is sativa or sativa dominant hybrids, so 'too much' is an overly potent sativa high. And part of it I'm sure is just a reflection of who I am. We all have canabinoid receptors in our brains, what we do after we receive it seems to vary widely.
