Is a shift happening in the normally frozen-in-place world of cable news ratings?

It's hard to tell, but something unexpected has happened over the last two days: MSNBC has beaten Fox News in the all-important A25-54 category two nights in a row.

TVNewser was the first to spot the trend. While it may not seem like too big a deal for MSNBC to jump ahead of Fox News, it's rather surprising that it is happening at all. The total dominance of Roger Ailes' network is one of the biggest articles of faith in the television business. As Alex Weprin wrote, "The number one show in the demo on cable news is always, always "The O'Reilly Factor" unless there is some sort of unusual news event or huge booking."

But, on both Monday and Tuesday -- with neither a huge news event nor a huge booking -- MSNBC beat Fox News. Rachel Maddow's ratings in the demo on Tuesday were better than Bill O'Reilly's and Sean Hannity's. Lawrence O'Donnell's were better than Greta van Susteren's. Overall, MSNBC beat Fox News 575,000 to 526,000.

Fox News has little to worry about in terms of total viewers; the gap between it and the competition is a huge one. But A25-54 viewers are the most important ones because advertisers set their rates based on how many people in that category tune in. A change in the demo can powerfully affect a network's bottom line. While it is obviously too early to draw any big conclusions, a longer trend would be a very big deal indeed.

Is it just me or did the pilot light just go out in Hell? I hope this is a continuing trend. Maybe it's an indication that America is finally waking up from it's trickle down stupor.

People tire quickly of re-runs. Turn Fox News off today, turn it on again in a year. Same jackasses braying the same jackass songs. Nothing like a corporation like Fox News owned by an ex-Aussie telling us to boot immigrants out.

Actually Murdoch is for amnesty, and immigration reform

Yes, we all know how much the uber-liberals would like to shut down Fox news, and cheer every time they take a hit. Its odd how you never hear about a conservative talking about shutting down an opposing opinion, as freedom of speach is ingrained in conservative principles. But orginizations like media maters ( a liberal website endorsed by the Oboma administration ) has made it their mission to do just that. Or in colleges and universities where they refuse to allow conservatives to speek at all.
I remember a time when liberal principles used to mean real free speech, and real freedom. I used to consider myself one. They have migrated from liberalism to facism and adapted the principles of totalitarialism over freedom, retaining only the soundbites of freedom. Free speech only as long as you agree with their ideals is not free speech at all. If you don't support the right for someone to espouse an idea you don't agree with, you don't support free speech.

Here's the problem. Ted Turner. He used CNN to rouse the Left, and he aroused Mr. Murdoch, as well. Murdoch see this un-holy alliance
with the Soros crowd. He takes action. Creates Fox News and blows the doors open for Cable 24x7 news cycle "fair and balanced"

If your competition is leaning far left, you have to lean out to the right.

But, MSNBC does no hard news. they are not in the running. They went "me-to" on the cable for $$$$. And they have no journalistic intention. And their ratings should be compared to sit-coms.
So, just more stupid test to me.

Will you fright wingers be gone after Obama wins on November?

Would like to shut down Fox news? I don't know, I think that most would simply like them to state that they are not a news organization but a propaganda arm of the Republican party - big difference.

Never hear conservatives talking about shutting down opposing viewpoints? Really? Fox went on a tear in an attempt to shut down Media matters or remove their tax exempt status, does that count?

Funny thing about freedom of speech, a portion of that is the freedom to claim that someone else should not speak.

Actually CNN is cleaning up their act a little bit. I think they have seen that being parrots to the liberal view doesn't pay so well. Nobody wants to watch a 'News' organization that just repeats the white house handouts without questioning the validity of the statements. The duty of the forth estate is to keep the government honest by pointing out where government is being dishonest with the citizens. Whereas NBC won't even report on such things as the fast and ferious gun running operation opertation, cnn at least tried. All nbc did was try and equate it to a previous operation that was run during the Bush years ( that didn't loose guns and where nobody died ) and to make excuses for the administration. Has NBC done any critical reporting on Obama other than to be his personal cheerleaders? At least CNN is starting to try a little objective journalism.

Media Maters claims tax exempt status, check out the laws and rules for such. On their own website they claim that one of the primary purposes for their existance is to remove fox news from the airwaves. If all they where doing was to point out fallacies in fox's reporting then there would be no problem. But that is not what they are doing. They are also in direct contact with the white house on what to print and what to attack. This makes them a direct working arm of the Obama re-election program, which is illegal under their tax exempt status. If they were not claiming tax exempt staus then there would be no problem, they could say whatever they like and let the chips fall where they may, but being a tax exempt organization is a whole different ballgame.

The media hasn't been liberal since the 70's. You're right though, CNN is trying to pander to objectivists.

We will all be circling the drain if Obama wins another term, frightwingers and theftwingers both.

Darn right I'm a "fright winger" What would I do? First thing I would do is buy more guns and ammo, as much as I can get befor Oboma does away with the 2nd amendment.
2nd thing is buy gold and silver, as much as I can get, befor Oboma destroys our ecconomic system and creates high inflation through his monetary and spending policies.
3rd thing I would do is to try and live as completely off the grid as I can so his goons cant 'reditribute' my hard earned wealth.

( If you are such a fan of redistributing the wealth, than I assume that you will be giving away at least half of your crop to somebody who did not bother growing their own? I doubt it )

It's times like these that I wish I was an ammo manufacturer. I think there's been 4 or 5 of these Obama panic buying furies.

Have fun going Galt, let us know how the perpetual motion machine turns out.
