Where do roots grow in the pot?

My plant is not looking healthy, anyway, I decided to re pot and...... The roots were surrounding the perimeter of the compost ball (bit root bound), but there didnt appear to be many roots at all in the centre of the compost ball. Is this normal for healthy or unhealthy plants? thanks, UKP
