i have had this problem, i tried physan 20 , and it made a huge bubble soapy mess. I 1st tried adding it to a dwc res and it was ugly. Then i soaked the roots and medium in it gave them a rinse and it wouldn't touch it. I did a res change but not with earthworm casting tea.

like i said i bought hygrozyme, physan 20, food grade peroxide. 60 bucks later i used bleach. and that knocked it out. Its either going to fix it or kill the plants is what I was thinking. Plants can handle chlorine(in small amounts), just not chloride. Fish can't handle chlorine and can stand chloride. I read about the physan 20 and people swore by it , it didn't work 4 me.

First try ph at 5.8 Set pump on a timer comes on every 5 min stays on for 60 sec.. First clean up your roots i have taken them right out and put under sink and flush them outby hand then put them back... i have a aero system..

wiseguy if you read the thread i posted in the previous post, its very informative,
it talks about how hygrozyme actually feeds the slime.
here is an intersting post by fatman, he has been banned = (

Roots exposed to oxygen usually have no anerobic bacteria in close proximity. So what. Both anerobic and oxygen loving bacteria eat only the putrefied roots that are the result of root rot. They do not cause root rot. All water and soil not containing disinfectants have bacteria and enzymes present that cause the putrefication of dead roots. This putrefication of dead roots is root rot. IE when you buy things like Hygrozyme you are buying bacteria and enzymes that cause root rot as well as the aerobic bacteria and enzymes that convert the rotted roots into nitrate fertilizer. Hygrozyme fails to tell anyone this. It is hard to decptively cause people to believe Hygroxzyme prevents or cures root rot when it actually supplies in large numbers the bacteria that also cause root rot when dead roots are present. They also fail to tell you the bacteria and enzymes are naturally present in soils and water not containing disinfectants. You are just paying to get a higher concentration of the bacteria and enzymes that quickly die to normal minimal levels due to a lack of food in a chemical nutrient system. They have food only when roots start dieing or in a organic nutrient reservoir or a soil system. where they are already at high levels without hygrozyme being added. Deceptive advertising on their behalf.

without using beneficals, there isnt much point in using the physan 20 in the first place, (for brown algae)

its the only cure I have ever seen, I tried pretty much everything richyrich had,
you can get a bottle of physan for 10 bucks at worms way, and you get get the worm castings there as well( buy the wiggle worm brand, not the black gold!)
http://www.wormsway.com/detail.aspx?t=prod&sku=PHY702&AC=0

I also use aquashield which is hella cheap and earth ambrosia and earth nectar, but you can use great white if your prefer
I wouldnt use the triple action, I acutally tried it first, but it didnt help with my problem. physan all the way baby.. wear gloves
good luck

not brave enough to try the bleach..lol..it's all good..but if it doesn't work, you'll try it..best of luck man..it sucks. Full recovery if you transplant to dirt. I have done that before as a last resort.

yeah, wiseguy is right, if things start looking to bad, put them in dirt.
better to have a harvest, then next time run beneficials from the get go = )
although looking at ur roots, I think you will be fine if you follow richyrichs guidelines, and get the tea brewing in a couple days.
also if you put a uv filter in ur rez(before problems start) u shouldnt have a problem with the brown algae, u just wont be able to run bene's

oh ill deffinatly try the bleach if it comes down to it =] haha not scared, just dont wanna do anything to abrasive if i dont have to ya know.
but one problem i see with the physan and tea, is i dont have where to have the plants while thats running through the system...
im sure i could rig something together, but do you HAVE to let it run without plants in there?
im bringn all the plants up ina few mins to just rinse them real good for the moment. just tht alone has saved em so far i think lol
but yea going to soil is deffinatly an option if i think there going downhill.

its totally ok to let it run while the plants are in there, but only at 3 mil per 25 gallons.
so drain ur system, add plain water and 3 mils per 25 gallons, run from 6-12 hours then drain rez
replace with fresh water, ewc tea, (aquashield and some mycorrhizal is great, but not totally necessary if you dont have the cash)
keep the ec around .6 - .8 for a week.
then go back to whatever feeding cycle u were on.

u use a larger dose when your cleaning the system, and your plants Are Not in there. = )

Since my fight with this i use chlorine all the time as a preventive measure instead of h2o2. I don't ever want that crap again. I stopped letting my tap water sit for 24 hrs too.
