i was thinking that there are a ton of people out there who survive childhood and old age because of modern medicine including antibiotics. i was also thinking about how many people were walking around with urinary tract infections and STD's before the invention of penicillin and the like. i work in the adult and childrens hospitals and most of the people who are admitted would die if not for modern medicine treatments.

People in other parts of the world are still dying just because they need a little penicillin...I don't see why we can't just send them some...
I need an African pen pal...then I can just send them all these things they need without all this charity taking most of the donation thing. I wouldn't mind to just send a round of antibiotics a week overseas to someone that needs them...why can't we do that?

Tricky question. I'm Native and diseases weren't too bad until there were new settlers.

I've always wondered how they would/ did treat Type 1 Diabetes in the past. I'm sure I would have passed as a baby when I first started showing signs of having it at age 2. Most likely would have caught a high/ low glucose level and gone into a comma.

My appendix burst and I walked around that way for several days thinking I had the stomach flu. I'm lucky I survived at all, and would have died in another day or two without emergency surgery

Yes I would ,

I don't take any form of pills or over the counter medicine.
All I smoke is weed
Can't even remember the last time I had the "common cold"

Maybe that's a good thing maybe its just my short term memory starting to go Idk

But then again I'm only 22

I know I would, But I pretty sure my girlfriend would not be here.

She was born with 3 lungs instead of 2 and the 3rd lung was pushing on her heart, right when she was born the doctors put her into surgery and told her mom she had a 50/50 chance of living.

They successfully removed it, and she has no side effects today from what happened, only thing she has is a barely visible scar that goes from left to right across her entire back.

Damn, just reminding myself of that makes me realize how lucky I am to have her.

when i was a child i was prone to strep throat and ear infections, got it atleast once a year, but never got treated for any of them. My mother was a widow and had to take care of three of us, so it was tough to go to the doctors for everything. Nowadays, i just get migranes, so the only meds i take are excedrin.

Modern medicine has saved my life, but it's also taken a toll on my body....Prednisone sucks. Remicade sucks. Synthetic drugs suck

I'll stick with my green and a vaporizer...that's all the meds I need.

Since I have had a root canal ... no. The infection, unchecked, would have done me. Dentistry is unappreciated for its effect on longevity. cn

Well It almost killed me then saved my life, I went in at age 3 to have some baby teeth removed so my adult teeth would come in straight and the anesthesiologist decided to guess my weight and failed bad, that evening I stopped breathing and was saved by my grandmother who trained as an ER nurse, she had not left my side post surgery ;)

Same here had never felt pain like that in my life. GOOD DENTIST are very unappreciated, oral hygiene is the key to a healthy life. Your tongue alone indicates how ur body is doing :)

I had a staph infection some time ago. Dunno if the antibiotics necessarily saved my life, but they sure are still having an affect on my body 6 years later.

The weird part is, it didn't hurt very much. But when the dentist drilled into the tooth, the smell that came from underneath was astonishing. I'm glad I didn't hurl; with my mouth in harness it would have been inconvenient. cn
