Why don't more ppl grow auto flowers?

I'm a home grower who does it for fun...and so that I don't have to buy mystery weed. I grow autos because its a 2 1/2 month investment and I'm done until I start to run out. I would grow photos but you end up being tied to your house month after month. This 3 Bears OG was 7 weeks from seed when I took this. The two largest buds are cola can size. She is 36" and I plan on harvesting at 11 weeks and I'll be shocked if I don't pull at least 3 ozs per plant (I have 4). Anyone wants to do a blind fold test between this and a photo OG will have a hard time telling the difference...I see it all the time with overeas musical gear vs domestic...whole foods vs grocery store meat, etc...people swear there's a difference but they fail the blindfold test time after time. I'm 55 and didn't start smoking yesterday. Autos that are **grown properly** are a no brainer for a home grower who doesn't want to dedicate a full time space to growing.

Beautiful plants they look amazing!

Hey guys, how is everyone?
When you guys grow a plant how long does it take to finish?

I know I used to veg for a month and then flower for about 3 months. Thats 5 months just to grow a couple plants.
When I came across autoflowers I couldn't believe that it only takes 2 months to harvest.

So you can harvest 2 autoflowers before one regular plant. That's a pretty big difference so I was wondering why more ppl don't grow auto's.
[/QUOTE here's a big Moby Dick automatic from Pev Seeds , smells like a skunk who's been chasing tequila with a lemon

One of the main advantages of growing photo you have more control of the size of the plant to suit your growing space, also something to consider when growing auto strains is your plant somewhere down the auto line has more than likely been crossed with and will contain a certain amount of ruderalis indica! which in its self is weak in thc! For me Autos are really useful for outside grows

This thread is hilarious. First post the guy claims it takes 5 months to grow photos from seed to harvest and then some guy in another post said autos are ready in 2 months from seed.

I can grow and harvest a photo as fast as any auto. Flip it 4 weeks from seed which is about the time many auto's start flowering. All I have to do is change the timer for my light. The horror. Both still take the same time to finish flowering once they start.

I have seen some auto's with decent sized colas but most have an extremely high leaf to calyx ratio. But that's the ruderalis. Not a trait I want in what I grow to smoke. The only reason I will ever grow them is to have something to harvest outdoors in August. I'd never bother growing them indoors as there are so many more superior choices available when growing photos.

Some are working with strains other than ruderalis like some of the semi-autoflowering strains from the Middle East region. That seems like a better path for breeding autos than using ruderalis. I have a few crosses using a Sinai male that went full flower under 18/6 after about 5 weeks. I'll be growing a couple of those outdoors this summer and playing around with them over the next year or two.

I grow em in veg tent with moms. Get some weed outta the power being used. Good testers for new things too. Testing some coco (never used it before really) on the autos and if they fail Idgaf! (But they're doing great lol)
Unless it's something special I usually dont even smoke the flower, just make concentrate or keep the best parts and gift it to some friends in need

This thread inspired the creation of the one just 2 spots above it on todays list. Lol
I personally don’t mind autos. I have quite a few, but I like to control the space. An auto isn’t going to let me do as much as I’d like to before it decided to flower. So autos will be grown either outside, or on separate runs.
just my 2 pennies. (Only because this pic happened lol) AC622943-2A80-4408-9F4A-1F6FFF8E6544.jpeg

Good use for autos.

Autos would be so much better if they had a better leaf to calyx ratio... The vast majority of pics thrown up here are like that.
It will probably happen eventually, but by then they will be photos
It really depends... Sometimes I get really nice phenos outta the bunch. But it's not like you can keep that mom and cut it out.... Sort of a gamble each seed but I mean it's 90-95% of the time good smoke. I've had some misses on some mephisto freebies. Lol
Personally, I'd never run a full room of them I prefer the control in a big room that photos have.

Most of us are novice home growers who grow for our own personal use. A lot of us don't want bigger yields. That's what photos are for...we already know that.

I have some very nice Gelato 41 and some Wedding Cake. Both were purchased at a dispensary I frequent in Portland. I also have a jar of nicely cured Mephisto 3 Bears OG auto. I'm 58 and by no means a newbie. I can promise you..the 3BOG is an equally good smoke to the other two.

Ruderalis Schmuderalis..

What does being a novice home grower have to do with anything? One specific auto strain from a decent breeder that you may have been satisfied with isn't representative of a good portion of the auto's out there.

Each to there own but i think autos are for outdoors or maybe to stick in with some mothers if u keep any otherwise i just wouldnt i guess its personal preference really also people are stubborn too if they already got a good thing going with photoperiod strains why risk the switch as the old saying goes if it aint broke dont try to fix it

See the thread title. "Why" and "who" has everything to do with the conversation. Most of the people I interact here are novice growers too.

There's plenty of crappy photos out there too. Ethos and Night Owl has great autos. I just grew Rocbud and some HSO Bubba Kush that were as good as Mephisto. Dinafem had great autos..RQS Amnesia Haze auto was amazing too. I grow photos too. Autos have come a long way. Not trying to talk you into growing them...just pointing out that a lot of what you are saying just isn't true.

Photo's will be whatever you want. Auto's do whatever they want.
Current grow i flipped before maturity because i have 4 in a 3x3. With autos you dont have that flexibility.

Agreed. With autos you have almost no flexibility. They are not for everyone.
