The "What I did wrong" Thread

This is a thread for people to share their mistakes so that others can learn from them (hopefully).

My first and biggest mistake with cannabis cultivation was harvesting too early, and not slow-drying in darkness.

Who likes hay smell. Not me. A nice crop turned mediocre.

Your turn to save a newbie some pain.

On my recent crop I had fallen into a routine of watering every three days. It got so routine that I wasn't even looking at the plants between waterings. Nothing to see, right?

Well, wrong. The plants use more and more water as they advance toward the end of flowering, and temperature fluctuation can make the soil moisture level even more unpredictable.

The plants ended up severely dehydrated and I almost lost the entire crop.

Check your plants every day! Even if things are going smoothly.

Early harvest is definitely a big one for new growers. It's very tempting to pick some " sample" buds then some more sample bids til there's no plant left. My biggest mistake as a new grower was shitty soil coupled with irregular feeding mixes/schedules.

I nute burned my seedlings. I gave nutes at 1/4 strength 1 week in. I should of waited till 2 weeks +.

I nute burned my clone. I gave nutes full strength 1 week after it had rooted. I should of waited till 2-3 weeks.

My noob mistakes from earliest to latest.

1st-Overwatering seedlings and in early veg which attracted gnats and caused other issues.

Only water when pots are almost completely dry, this is especially true in veg.

2nd-Feeding nutes too early at too high of strength. Getting to experience your first nute burn, not priceless. I'm not sure if anyone can say they've never experienced it.

It takes some experience to know the best time to begin nutes but it's easy to just start out at 1/4 the recommended strength and work your way safely up to each plants specific needs.

3rd-Began flushing too early. Early on I went by the flowering times issued by breeders, and I began counting days from 12/12 instead of first signs of pistils like one should. I got almost full cloudy trichs and began flushing. I went 32 days of water only before I got my 10-20% I like. About 3 weeks over estimated breeder times. It was some of the cleanest smoke I ever had but I definitely lost yield and possible potency.

Breeder times are good to use to estimate but you must begin counting days at or soon after signs of first white pistils rather then the 12/12 switch. And always prepare to go at least 1 week over breeder times. You must also factor in any issues you had IMO and IMExp. If you burnt your plants in flower, or whatever issue in flower, and you spent a week or more recovering, you just lost that week. I don't know how true this is outdoors, but indoors any time I've had issues in flower my flowering times were longer then normal. I suppose the same could be said if one didn't have enough lumens, or watts if you prefer, to properly flower your girls. I remember when I was doing half the lumens in the room I have now and flowering times then went on much longer then they do now.

4th-Messing around with lighting schedules and tricks.

It's simple. 18/6 veg-------12/12 flower. Nothing else works better, why mess around?

Great thread.

How about changing things based on others' advice.
Five different people saying 5 different things that don't add up to squat could lead to.disaster.

There's to much of that lol. Great thread! Great idea! My biggest newbie mistake was letting my dad take care of them for 9 days.. Other than that I seem to have a green thumb I hope it don't wear off!

The absolute Biggest mistake I ever made growing was showing a buddy some of my outside plants. Wasn't long and he was showing his buddies my outdoor plants. Big, big mistake.

Awesome guys, glad this thread took off. I know for sure we can save plants and headaches like this.

I made another big mistake when I decided to grow in a rented apartment. Not because I got caught, but because I instantly became a paranoid wreck.

You're sitting there and no matter how rational you usually are, if you've gone 5 stressful months without a bowl, it just seems like a good idea. Till you start it.

The paranoia prevented any 'incidents', but took a heavy toll on my psyche and made it tough to do the college thing. Needless to say I did poorly that year.

And if you're immune to the paranoia, you're going to get caught anyway.

I guess I'm fairly lucky so far, we'll see when I finally come to harvest time, but my only mistake (as far as growing goes LOL) so far, was that I started mine in soil in a clear plastic Potato Salad container, four feet under a four foot flourescent fixture with a plant/aquarium bulb on a 6/18 light schedule, THEN thought about looking online a month after germination to see if I could learn anything about growing.

i gave cuttings of all my best genetics to a "friend", when i asked for some cuts back ,they were not the same plants i gave him and they also had spider mites and thrips on.

go figure!

what did i do wrong? everything..

biggest mistake i made... if you dont got co2... and your not bringing in fresh air... your buds wont get big, your choking your plants and they wont do well no matter what.

over watering does not make your plants bigger.

my buddy told me that only noobs go on roll it up, so i didnt visit too frequently the first couple runs. because i knew everything and had a dope ass 4 lighter pullin 3 pounds and didnt need anyones help. i guess this falls under the mistake of being like every grower and thinking you know everything no matter how shitty your crop ha. take peoples good information and be humble.

dont use too much nutes.. learn your feed and then learn to push the envelope as you excel with it.

growing weed is HARD WORK. if you put in a half ass effort, thats exactly what your going to get back out.

when in doubt, flush it out.

My biggest mistake to date was...
My pots had holes on the bottom but not on the sides. The holes on the bottom were clogged sitting in the pan. My babies started turning yellow and dying. I lifted up the pot and water came pouring out of the bottom smelling just like rotten eggs.
Now I make sure to drill holes on the sides of the pot down at the bottom.

My second big mistake was allowing a light leak to hermie my royal queen blue mystic.

Great thread idea!

1) Drying and curing improperly turned great weed into mediocre.
2) I hung too long on one strain thinking I could really dial in my methods.. the huge variation in strains is wonderful and can be enlightening.
3) Direct sun to my formerly indoor plants amounted to genocide.
4) If you're in soil go organic.
5) In hydro use benficial bacteria not peroxide.
