The Quest For The Old Skunky Afghani

@eastcoastmo Thank you man! ;) They were getting a bit too much nitrogen because of the seabird guano but I've been giving them plain water so it's all good now. Yes sure, I'm going to make some seeds. I'll pollinate a few branches on each plant tomorrow.

@yes, I'm getting exited too, some already have a bit of frost.. :weed:. I won't be making F1s at first. I'll do a controlled open pollination with the best males and best female to preserve the genetics. But If your interested let me know :bigjoint:. At the same time, I took cuttings from each plant. That way, it will be possible to stabilize a line with the skunkiest/most pungent phenos once I know which plants grow the best buds.
I'll run some thin layer chromatography tests (TLC) to select for cannabinoids (THC, CBD...) also.

Hell yeah brother! Your really going that extra mile on this and I hope all your hard work pays off handsomely. If anybody's going to find anything close to the rks pheno, I really think you got a good shot here. I'm excited lol!

@eastcoastmo Cheers man!

@Seymour Green Thanks, I really appreciate the words of encouragement. I'm passionate about it, the RKS is by far my favorite weed. :weed:

The plants are now 38 days into flower. There are different phenos and smells but 2 major groups:
  • Some have broad leaves, thick pistils and flower fast.
  • Some that stretched a bit more, have thin leaflets, thin long pistils and flower a bit more slowly.
The plants are starting to get a bit frosty. There are a few that have a Skunky smell but it's still a bit early to know for sure.

Without further ado, here are the latest pics:

Very nice plants!

Really can appreciate the work you doing, good luck and I will be following along.

Haven't had anything skunky in over ten years. Must have been 06 or 07. Was some nice skunky outdoor though. Funny how I can still remember that weed :)

Thank you!

Me too!! That was in high school 11 years ago! I had got some seeds from a classmate and grew them outdoors in a bramble bush, only 200 yards away from the school.. That weed was the skunkiest I ever had.

I even kept some beans but I can't find them :wall:

My heart breaks for your lost seeds!

I've lost some killer beans as well (or possibly gave some away and forgot)

The genetics are out there, they just need to be found and you're on the right track!

Hello Indoor growers and outdoor farmers!

The plants have been in 12/12 for 46 days now. It's really interesting because at this point you can clearly notice the different phenos.
Some are pretty fast flowering (The ones that stretched the least) while others are taller, and started flowering later.

Now that there are some trichomes, I can say that most plants have floral smells. They smell like Rose/vanilla candies.

However there're a few Skunky phenos ;).

Here they are at day 46 after the flip:

This one is the most "Sativa-like" but the smell is very skunky

@DonBrennon Hello! No, I flipped them when they were a few days old before they reached sexual maturity. That's why the flowering phase will be 5-7 days longer than had I flipped them later. Also the last picture shows the slowest flowering pheno out of all the plants so most of them will finish much sooner. Last but not least, I'm growing them in organic soil which is slower than Hydro or Coco.

Not all Afghans have broad leaves and flower fast. In fact, most Afghan plants were sativa-like a few centuries ago. Robert Connel Clarke talks about that in his book "Hashish".

@rollinfunk Thanks for the encouragement brother! I hope soo too. The plants are getting more pungent by the day so I'll be able to really determine which ones are the skunkiests in about a week.

@DotCom Thank you so much mister dotcom! ;) It's a numbers game...

Hello weeders!

Here we are, 52 days after the flip.

Most of the buds don't smell as skunky as their stems did. However, there are a few of them that do have a cool skunky smell.
The others aren't bad at all either. There are a couple of plants that have a very pleasant sweet/floral fragrance that smell like bubblegum. It's kind of hard to describe that smell but I also love it.;-)

This one has the black pheno (Leaves turning dark purple/black during flowering) and it's also one of the two plants with that awesome candy/floral smell:

The picture doesn't do this one justice but the pistils are turning red/pink:

I've had to cull a few hermies as you would expect with a landrace that has never been "worked" but so far, most of the females aren't throwing any nanners. :weed:

@eastcoastmo Thanks mate!! Some will be ready in less than a week but most plants will still need about a couple of weeks.

Hi growers and lurkers!

The plants were flipped to flower exactly 60 days ago.

I was expecting the plants to flower a bit faster but I'm surprised by the size of some of these buds :eyesmoke:

Baseball bat pheno with a nice sweet floral scent
Balkh F+60.jpg

This one flowers more slowly but the smell is great and the leaves are turning black

The seeds on the lower branches that were pollinated are starting to turn brown/beige, they'll probably be mature in 2 to 3 weeks. They're really big, just like most seeds from Afghan, Uzbek and PCK cultivars..

Hey there @eastcoastmo , Yes, they will probably be pretty cool. Some plants should be high in CBD like most Hash plants (Lebanese, Moroccan, Himalayan).

The plants have been flowering for 67 days now. Some of them are already "ripe" but I'm going to let them go for a little while longer to make sure the don't throw any nanners (I want nothing be pure females...:weed:).

Some plants started throwing one or two nanners this past week (Right before the finish line.. lol). I culled them immediately. It is to be expected when growing pure landraces indoors.. But fortunately I'll probably be able to find enough pure females at the end of this run.

Some phenos are very interesting.

This one is the fastest-flowering pheno. Ready at day 65. The bud is very dense, not too leafy and the smell is both floral and spicy, very complex smell. I like it.
105_1475.JPG

This one is also ready. It isn't very productive but the bud smells like straight up blueberry. The calyxes are slightly purple also..
105_1489.JPG

I don't know if you guys can see it but I pollinated the lower branches on each plant. Some of the calyxes are swollen. The seeds inside of them are very big. (About twice as big as your average seed.)
105_1492.JPG

And here is the most productive pheno. This one still needs about 2 more weeks but it is massive.
105_1470.jpg

I'm super stoked about the fact that the Afghans have been flowering much faster these past few weeks.

Have a good day/night guys!
