I wonder if it's mostly old republicans and foxnews viewers... From reports I've seen even mild cases of covid can have long tern consequences in terms of organ damage.

Almost all of the COVID-19 deaths being recorded in America are among people 65 years and older, and a majority did not receive the bivalent booster shot that became available last year.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported Wednesday that 90% of U.S. COVID-19 deaths from January to August 2023 were among the elderly.

The CDC and other health officials have responded by targeting the age group in much of its response to the virus. When vaccines first rolled out in late 2021, Americans over 65 were first in line to get a shot, and vaccine and mask mandates at many nursing homes lasted longer than they did in other settings.

These efforts have largely brought down COVID death and hospitalization rates — yet older Americans are still suffering the worst from the virus.

For the latest numbers, CDC researchers gathered data from 98 counties in 13 states from the first eight months of 2023. They found that 87.9% of people who died of COVID-19 in a hospital over the time period were 65 and older. The same group also made up more than 60% of COVID-19-related hospitalizations and ICU visits.

I just got my flu shot today for this season's version, I have to wait for until Nov 14th for my covid boost, since I had one earlier this year, but the new booster deals with the new strain that is making the rounds, and it will get worse along with the weather as winter sets in. I was hoping for a two for one, high dose flu and the latest covid booster, but now need another appointment.

Covid is still with us and can kill older folks while damaging younger ones who get milder cases. The vaccines and boosters might not be perfect, but they do offer some protection against the worst outcomes and make shorter cases with less contagion.

I think I'm eligible for the two-shot this season. I got the bivalent long enough ago to be ready for that and got my first flu shot ever last season. Never had any effects other than a sore spot on my shoulder for a day. I'll take both in the right side as I sleep on my left so don't want any hurt there.

Next Saturday on my 69th b-day is a halo eclipse of the sun that can be seen anywhere in North America. Get your welding glasses out as the next is many years away.

Just picked up and installed our new lifetime bed today. Beauty Rest Hotel, 1400 individual coils, some memory foam and nice pillow top without those damn buttons. Feels like laying on a cloud. Going to bed early tonight and the wife just loves it. Cool black mattress and seems a shame to cover it up. :)

She's been in the hospital for the last two weeks but all tests look good and it seems her thyroid has gone way out of whack so taking meds to hopefully fix it eventually.

:peace:

Watching one of the few TV shows I consistently watch on national tv and I see Bernie Sanders pop up…

Turns out I wasn’t hallucinating, ’nother iconic Bernie pose:

Not the most in-depth interview but a welcome change from the usual sensationalism.

He’d do well in the EU, very well probably.

Bernie on my TV again... Nov 22 elections in NL, so a book tour with as bonus some soft meddling from a socialist left US senator is welcome. Make's US look good along the way too, less divided, more normal. Not speaking for myself, just a common response I see/hear.

Lubach: "The funny thing is, Trump calls you a socialist"
Bernie: "Among other things"
Lubach: "But in the Netherlands we wouldn't even consider you extremely... left. You would be some low-key Frans Timmermans*"
Lubach: "And Obama wouldn't even be left, he'd be a member of the VVD [neoliberal ruling rightwing that provided PM for 13 years, making the rich richer and the poor poorer]."
Lubach: "It's like it shifted"

Cheap shot at Trump's lack of intelligence if you're into that sort of thing, the cheap part I mean:

Timmermans is a likely candidate to become our next PM and who I had in mind when I said in previous post Bernie would do well here. The emo climate guy from the EU, labor party, but they teamed up with green-left to try and beat the neoliberals. Bernie isn't socialist/left enough to be a member of the Socialist Party we got too. Given it will be a close race it's a real possibility Hamas's actions and Israel's reactions will prevent NL from swinging back to left (from center). Some of the more extreme left voters as well as voters with a muslim background the new left coalition needs to become the largest party (and thus provide PM) are let's say pro-Palestine and don't share the notion of the party leaders, including Timmermans, regarding Israel's right to defend itself.

Bernie is also critical of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians and Bebe would have a most unpleasant time with this most liberal of Jews as POTUS!
