Midwest, we live in a modern, large scale, technologically driven societies that are in a constant state of change and is capitalistically based economically. My guide on economic matters and human nature is Adam Smith, he didn't invent capitalism, but understood it's power and human nature. Capitalism does not require democracy to work, just look at the past couple of decades in China, but responsible government, but that doesn't last long with out democracy. Corruption moves in and capitalist use whatever means come to hand to profit, even promoting social division to retain power and political corruption at all levels of government.

Smith talked of government regulation too, as well of the "hidden hand".

We don't want folks dying in ditches and such, so there's taxes to provide services to the old (yer mom & dad) and unfortunate (the truly unfortunate). Our modern technological societies are plenty wealthy to provide these services to the citizens and redistribute wealth that was obtained by corrupt policy that distorted the playing field. Technology concentrates wealth automatically in our society, look back to the rail roads that kicked off the robber baron era of the late 19th century. It's only gotten worse with google, Amazon and Facebook who pay no US taxes, but reap hundreds of billions in profit. We face a very near future of millions of educated, intelligent and skilled people being thrown out of work by technology and there's gonna be trouble. Things will get worse before they get better for yer kids and grand kids, I hope anyway.
