Found this 400 watt MH light (attachment below).
Not intended for growing, but I was wondering if it might work.
When shall I introduce my 9 day old daughter which is currently under 4 CFL's.

PS Im not from the USA, sorry for my ignorance. Not everybody knows Lowes.

Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Don't apologize. It looks very good, but you're going to want to find a way to ventilate out the heat it generates.

heat is not a problem as I have one plant in a big place.

As for the light, I can change the bulb, HPS for flowering.

Thanks for all the positive replies. You guys are very knowledgeable. I will do my best to learn from you.

Electrical supply shops are also a great place to get ballasts and bulbs. If you let them believe you are a contractor you will get much better than retail pricing too.

Your MH light will work great! As to the comment on red and blue light and what that has to do with street lights...yellow = hps white=MH but sometimes white street lights are mercury vapor = not good for grow.

Seamaiden is correct, you should be thinking about ventilation, unless your mystery location is in the higher latitudes!

Oh and the light is probably not interchangeable with a regular HPS bulb. But I am not sure. Good luck and don't let the rude dudes discourage you!
Mean people suck my balls!

A couple of things for you to know. First, I don't know if that is a HPS bulb in there, might be Mercury Vapor like someone else posted. It doesn't look like any HPS bulbs I've ever seen. Could be wrong about that though. It's definately NOT MH. Second, you're not gonna be able to just switch bulbs in that fixture without changing the ballast. Do you know what wattage the bulb that's in there is?

Thanks for the insight everyone's help is hugely appreciated. I have plenty of space (empty storage room, door is always open to the rest of my apartment for ventilation) it's Air conditioned to maintain 75 deg. F. and I also placed a fan on the plant to cool it down and build a stronger stalk.

I'm still shying away from displacing my 4 CFLS with the 400 watt MH. The bulb packaging is written 'Metal Halide Halogen(??)' in German I presume (no I dont reside there)

UPDATE (10 day old bay)

Looking good I guess for a 1st grow, I hope.

Sup faroos, that's an odd looking bulb, but i couldn't see any reason it wouldn't work. Thing is, u say it says metal halide HALOGEN?

.... and also that u were currently using cfl's, and weren't quite ready to just switch to the new light, right? Cuz, u don't gotta just get rid of the cfl's and hope that bulb will work, just turn on the m.h. in addition to the cfl's. Even though u said heat wasn't an issue, radiant heat from the bulb itself will fry them plants in a hurry if u got it too close. Set it up plenty high enough, and get some temp readings at different distances from the bulb. Give it a shot.

Interesting tid-bit: Lowe's was founded by the ex-wife of the founder of Home Depot. When they divorced... she decided to build her own chain of similar stores and most of the Lowe's stores are located right next door or across the street from Home Depot. I think Lowe's was created out of spite and the decision to put one right next to almost every home depot was another spiteful move.

Well, that explains why Lowe's sucks compared to Home Despot, AND tends to be more expensive.

Faroos, you need to determine what the bulb type is, exactly. Is there any information to search on the manufacturer?

That is interesting, but they don't set up shop next to each other just out of spite. That's just how competition works, ever notice how there will be more than one gas station at an intersection? People coming from one direction will go to the easiest parking lot to pull into, and people going the other direction will pull into the other shops parking lot.

Oh for Christ's sakes, does everyone who grows indoors, for whatever reason, have to explain why they grow indoors and not out? Do either you or marley'man know what season it is in the northern hemisphere by any chance, either? Since you haven't noticed, we're less than a month away from the WINTER solstice. You know, the SHORTEST day of the year in the northern hemi? That might be just one reason why someone's trying to find a decent bulb and set-up. It's just one reason.
