OK, given that plant metabolism and the laws of thermodynamics create more esoteric levels of complexity to the actual answer to the hard question of how much actual heat/temperature is generated by LED, not to mention that heat dissipation of total wattage (and the supposed universality of that equation is still in question given the relative light-emitting efficiency of various diodes and bulbs versus their heat output per watt), I believe I have the answer to "is it hot under the light?"

What I gather is that with LED compared to HPS heat management is easier because:
1) due to efficiency LED's use less total watts to produce same total PAR (bonus: with more even spread, generally).
2) the emitters are not super-heated unlike HPS bulbs, so less direct radiant heat problem on the canopy.
3) the heat from LED mostly removed in the heatsink area, which is easier, or different, to manage

I basically gathered as much on day one from reading industry advertisements since 2010! lol, My purpose here is to fact check with people's experience. :idea::idea::idea::idea::idea::idea::idea::idea::idea::idea::clap:

I did come across this website that tests and publishes PAR measurements from various lights, including commercial LED fixtures. I was surprised at the levels of variation just with different 1000W HPS configurations:

I guess it comes down to "are LED's really a good replacement for HPS?" and people are still in various stages of figuring that out. It seems like with modern diodes they are viable, but the up front cost for the hardware is prohibitive for many and it's still soon in the commercial cycle of amortizing equipment purchases over time. But I assume that within 5 years the greenhouse supplemental lighting industry might be about 50% LED.

I want to hear from you fellows who have been putting in the time and money with these DIY arrays!

I built 2 cooltube style Vero 29 using pc sinks and 5" vinyl fencepost with the sinks inside the square tubes. Pretty much all of my heat is drawn out through the tubes. I still see around 5° increase from radiant heat I assume 6" directly below the cob. I run them at 2.1 amp each x 8. Heat is still heat but distributed over a larger area. Without the cooltube design heat was a problem in the small area. 40" x46". I can run around 500w in the area without the cooltube and no heat problem with around 80 to 100 cfm exhaust. I run the same amount of air exhaust through the cooltubes and I can run a lot more watts and get more product.
I like your cooltube idea. I was thinking it would be good for outdoor supplamental lighting. A narrow bar/heatsink to limit shading from the array, with the plastic tube sheilding the bar/heatsink from the sun

I'm so happy with my 3590 3500ºk...they do vegg very well for bloom cob...I am so surprised...really really surprised...now I want some 5000º or depend on REALSTYLE test maybe some 6500ºk!?

Realstyles, I cannot thank you enough man! There are many people on this forum that have been super informative but I have to say going through your threads and watching your creations grow some beautiful bud has really inspired me as it has I'm sure many others. I too am out here in LA and am finally getting around to starting my own legal grow of medicine. I cannot wait to get started!

I was about to drop serous coin on a KIND LED until I found this place and the LED Section and sufficed to say in the past 2 weeks I've been doing a lot of reading about lights. First I found Conventional LED, then Plasma, then Induction, and then the almighty COB. So glad to have found the prima materia ;).. I'm awaiting a new Gorilla Grow Tent, a 3x3x8 and have decided that instead of spending stupid amounts of money on something already made that might or might not work well and might or might not break after a few months, I've decided to.... D.I.Y. It's much more fun.

I would love some input if you have any but here's my plan. I've already made contact with Jerry and will be grabbing 4 CXB 3590's @ 3500K, 36v with a Meanwell Driver HLG-185H-C1400B, 4 Cob connectors and I'm going to grab some 80 degree lenses since they are only 5 bucks ea and if I don't like them I can ditch them. Still working on the heatsink plans but I have a couple ideas. Will be making a journal once things start arriving. Do ya think this will be enough light for my lil 3x3 Gorilla?

1500 to 2000 is about max Im willing to spend on a unit but 1000 is about the max I want to pay. I saw you say that you get what you pay for so I'm not expecting a 300 dollar build. I want the best LEDs I can get, I'll ditch out the money if its worth it even though I'm broker than a Mars led light sitting in a dumpster lol. I'm more than happy to take some advice from you on parts for a build until I can get this LED thing down myself. I like how clean everything looks. Thanks for helping the community.

So you will need 16 cxb 3590 3500ºk CD (36v or 72v)...about 800 $(with 16 holders! )
4 hlg 185-(1400 or 700)b...about 250$
Heatsink...depend if your in US or EU! For EU it will be 180 €
And 140mm fans..12V psu...wago...18awg...TIM (7gr I guess!)...potentiometer...and tools!

@littlejacob is approximately right, but definitely get a quote from RS.

I'mma hit you up to build some stuff for me soon @REALSTYLES - I don't have time to build it myself, and you have this DIY shit pretty dialed now.

A lot of people dont have the time, tools, or electrical/mechanical knowledge to build these units, these aren't your average everyday tools let alone a potentiometer. I've been waiting for years for LEDs, since the UFO smoke detector days, never venturing to LEDs because technology is always updating/not quite there yet and the price didnt go together well. I almost fell into the MARS hype this time round because of heat problems and because the price and hype of MARS lights.

About $1400 to make lights like mine it will be 2 panels that will cover the 5x5 with no problem and its real easy to put together if I can do it you can with no problem I'll be here to help. And when I get to my computer I'll post the links to get your parts to make the lights

I was all worried I would screw it up and took about 3 months to build mine... LOL It was easy and so far works great.

If it ever brakes it will be easy to fix also.

waiting on the fans and power supplies and I will start the next 4...
