quick cannabutter question...

ok so from what i understand you want to use about 1/4oz of trim/shake per cube of butter (4 cubes = 1lb of butter).

add cube of butter to stove top pot...melt butter...add trimmings...

how much water should be added to the mix (1/4oz trim/shake, 1/4oz butter)?

i must add water as even with my stove on the LOWEST setting it'll burn/boil the butter no matter how much i stir...i need water to slow down/prevent the boiling/burning of the trim/butter.

after it simmers on low for 8-12 hrs i just pour it all into a tupperware container and put it in the fridge? or freezer? then i just separate the butter from the ice/trimmings?

right or wrong?

someone help as i failed last time. thanks

Right, you put maybe 3 cups of water in a crock pot (if you dont have one, stove-top works ok); add a stick of butter and your weed (I use more like 1/2 oz of bud for 1 stick butter). Melt on low for 4 hours or so, then medium for another hour. Then, you need to get rid of the bud, so get some cheesecloth and pour the mixture into the cheesecloth which will drain into another pan. Put that pan in the fridge, and after the butter has risen to the top and solidified, take it out of the pan (leaving the water beneath the butter).

There you go, cannabutter. If you want to refine it to get more of the bad taste out, you can bring a pot of water to a boil, add budder, mix for 15 mins, then put in fridge. Once again, scoop butter out of pan once it rises and solidifies at the top.

thanks a lot. now i know what i did wrong the first time...NOT ENOUGH WATER! so it burned as i couldnt stop it from wanting to boil on the stove (even on the lowest setting).

does it technically matter how much water you put in? it will still separate in the end so im guessing no it doesnt matter but im just checking.

so if it starts to boil (even on the lowest setting) just add more water?

go to the general section you want to post ie, general, indoor, plant problems, advanced whatever. At the top left of the forum, above any threads, will be a button + Post New Thread, just like the +Reply to Thread once your inside a thread

Making butter is a huge thing for me. I'm not an expert, but I'm quick learner and I'm getting rather good at it if I do say so myself. Butter is a great way for medical patients to use pot, long lasting effects without harsh smoke. Purplehazin pretty much nailed it, and the idea of a croc pot or double boiler are great ideas too. Here's my routine though, in case it helps:

Heat your water in a large pot to a boil. I use 16 cups generally or more as my standard batch is 5lbs of butter :)
Reduce to a simmer, and add the butter. Then add your pot.
The ounce per pound of butter is pretty standard and very nice IMO, but I use an ounce of trim thats been quickly screened to extract some keif, so I supplement mine with 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of less than ideal buds from lower branches as well. Its a very strong blend.
I grind my weed in a coffee grinder, the smaller the better. I cook for 3-6 hours depending upon the time. I have done as long as 12 hours, but can not tell the difference between 12 and 3. Stir every 15-30 minutes. Your mixture should simmer, not bubble or boil.
After your preffered cooking time remove from heat for 30 minutes. Strain your mixture through cheesecloth or coffee filter (helps to have a friend). I strain mine twice, make sure to squeeze all of the liquid out of the strainer.
Toss it in a container, I prefer a flexible glad container. Then toss it in the fridge or freezer overnight. Water on the bottom, butter up top. Flex the container and it comes out like a big hockey puck. Toss the water and spent weed. Weigh a stick of butter and then weigh out your cannabutter to match so your sticks are prepped. I seem to lose 10-20% of my butter weight during the process.
There it is, and remember brownies call for a 1/2 cup of vegie oil usually, just melt your stick of butter in the microwave before hand and it works great.
I'm tinkering with some new methods of cannabutter and some matching recipes. Hope to start a thread about it soon. Enjoy bud, hope this helps.
