Outdoor grow questions

hello, i am a first time grower and i have planted 6 plants (Random Bagseed) for pretty much shits and gigs to start off my growing adventures. I started the plants back in early may and then moved them outside later that month. From what i can tell everything is going pretty well but as of the last time I checked on the plants there were no signs of pre-flowers or sex of plants (from what i read they will appear in about the next few weeks or so when the days continue to get shorter).

My questions are that:

1) My plants are rather big compared to what i see people talking about when they flip the switch to 12-12 (around 2 feet or 4 nodes). Two of my plants are around 6 feet tall (not sure how many nodes) and the other four are not far behind (around 4 and a half to 5 feet) and from what i heard they will at least double in size when they are in the flowering stage so my question is would it be best to just let them grow and let them turn into the trees they were meant to be or maybe top them or use another method to limit there vertical growth (not sure if it would be a good idea at this point).

2) I also fear that i might of planted the plants too close together I figured that since I did not know the sex of the plats it was a 50 -50 shot so at least some of them would in fact be males and I could pull them and leave plenty of room for the rest but just in case i get lucky and more are female then male would it be a good idea to maybe dig some up and space them correctly or would this stress the plants too much in this stage?

I'm sure i have more questions too but lets start with these before I get out of hand, thanks in advance for your help and i will try to get some fresh pictures of the hopefully female plants in the next day or so.

Thanks Again ; Dj

Verticle growth is up to you and it wasn't mentioned how close you planted them to comment on space.... but best of luck eitherway!!

You are going to have some monsters after stretch is over. You can top it, its up to you. Me personally I would top it now and top all the branches of the plant too. You wont hurt them because you have monsters already. You should be seeing pre flowers now or within the next 2 weeks if you don't have any but make sure you check real close and good would hate for you to loose entire crop because of one male. Also do not dig them ladies/gentlemen up you will have a hard time trust me. Just keep a good eye out them male balls grow FAST and with the size of your plants they will easily spread pollen yards away.

Thanks for your comment Ben. After reading the comments here i don't think ll be moving the plants anywhere, I was only going to do that if it was going to be a major problem but looking back i think will be just fine with the space we have especially if i do lose one or two of the plants due t them being males.

Hey Megatron and thanks for your comment.

I hope that they do turn out to be some nice monster females and i was definitely leaning towards topping them but was not sure if it would slow them down too much at this point in time but now i think ill give it a shot. One question tho what do you mean when you say "top all the branches too" because i have only seen the tops of the plants being "topped" is it the same process only on the branches? If i can get that cleared up and then the pre-flowers show up in the next two weeks or so I think will be well on our way to see what these plants can really do.

Again thanks for your help i think ill take some pictures later today and ill try to get them up for tomorrow.

Yea Medicalcenter i have head these things before, next year i will certainly give my girls some more space to let them really flourish. This summer has really been crazy weather where im from its either raining or too hot to even go outside but i think that the plants are loving it. I just can't wait for the next few weeks to really see them develop into some great looking plants.

Ok people, Against what was recommended I have left the plants to grow naturally straight up towards the sun. I think I am gonna wait till next time to get into topping to see the difference for myself. I visited the plants the other day and saw our first pre-flowers but my phone was dead at the time so i was unable to take any pictures. I will go back today I think if the weather permits and get some nice pictures so yo guys can see how the plants are doing they should be up by tonight f not early tomorrow.

You can expect your plants to grow larger outdoors...thats just the way it is. The other factor on plant size is also strain and pheno dependant. There are plants that have a natural short bushy growth pattern but you have to search out those strains. Based on what you are describing, I would say there is a pretty good chance that your dealing with some sativa genes, although some Indica strains can grow some what tall. At this stage in the game I would not top them as the are soon going to start flowering...it's already headed into August. They will continue to stretch...how much...thats anybodys guess since we dont know anything about the strain. If you feel that they are getting to tall start tying them down...bending them. Dont go apeshit pulling on them right away....start with a pretty good pull and continue over the course of several days getting them where you want them. That will help some. Topping would have been better but earlier in the Veg state.

Do not pull the males out but rather cut them at the base as you do not want to disturb the root system of the remaining plants....you dont want to shock them especially now that they are getting ready to start the flower stage. Also do not try to transplant any if they are females and to close together. You just have to deal with it at this point and learn for next season. Fucking with the root system at this stage is not a good idea. You want your plants putting all thier energy into making flowers and not trying to recover from stress....stress creates all sorts of other issues. Best of luck!!

Do not try to compare growth rates and growth patterns from indoor to out door. They are two different growing methods all together. Anything can happen on an outdoor grow...there are to many variables outdoors. I have grown certain strains out one year and then grown them out the following year and seen complete different looking plants. Thats because the micro climate changes from year to year....perhaps one year its warmer dryer weather and the following year its wet and cool...ETC. On an indoor grow....the grower affords himself the opportunity to control his micro climate whereas outdoors....mother nature calls the shots there!!!

Ya....you planted to close. Judging from the leaf pattern it appears that there is some Indica genes in those plants....prob a hybreed cross of something. The stems on them are not very thick and once your males have shown themselves you can prob tie them down without to many problems. Look for your males to be the taller plants although thats not always exact....males have different pheno variations as well sooooo.

Can't determine sex from pics.
Bear gives sage advice.

Once you know which ones are males, eliminate them.
Tie down the remaining girls in opposite directions from each other.
As Bear says, do it gradually.

I use a pantyhose loop around the stem...tied to heavy monofilament fishing line staked down in ground.

Okay guys, bad news first. Our tallest plant turned out to be male.(shout out to Bear for calling it) IMG_20130804_174924.jpgIMG_20130804_174931.jpgIMG_20130804_175004.jpgIMG_20130804_175018.jpgIMG_20130804_175035.jpg But the good news is I think that the rest are in fact female which means we have a total of 5 healthy female plants, pretty dam good for 50/50 chance. I posted pics of the male above, not much has changed with the other 5 but I will update you guys as soon as we see some nice development.
