Old Seeds

My seeds are 9 years old. They have been stored in a dark cool place their whole life.

Is there any chance of germinating these at this point? If so, are there any techniques I should use for old seeds?

If they are viable still how much longer will they remain viable?

These seeds were purchased in 1999, about 3-6 months after the Cinderella99 strain came out. The fighting cockerell cross (also a Brothers Grimm strain) is probably a cross with NL#5 -which was purchased from Heavens Stairway. I also have some MC's Breakfast which I think was intended for indoors, and NCGA primo mix.

they should still be viable so try and germinate them,they were storeed properly and u awwwwant to use the paper towel method for germinating

you should soak them in water over night,not longer than 24 hrs..
than put them between moist papper towel and cover with plastic..
they may take 2 days or they may ake 2 weeks

I am glad to hear they will still have a chance!

What is the ideal temp to keep them at when germinating?

Any idea how much longer they could last in storage?

if you have a vcr or dvr or tivo,put the paper towel in a ziploc bag,moisten it,put the seeds in it and blow it up with your breath and they will sprout in a day or less,put the sealed bag wit seeds in itt on the dvr or ect

they could still be good for another year to five

the seeds may or may not be viable. although seeds can stay good for many years, they should have been stored in something like a canister full of whole rice. the rice acts kind of like an insulator. the main purpose of the rice though, is to absorb moisture.

Get a small match box and line it with sandpaper....if you don't have that a nail file will work. Either throw the seeds in the box and shake for a bit or lightly buff them with the nail file. I planted some seeds a month ago that were 5+ years old and all but one germed....ymmv

I had 5 Northern Lights #5 seeds from 1993 that I had forgotten about...Only 1 sprouted . I grew it with some other varieties and harvested it in May of this year. Still some great smoke. I had those seeds in a envelope that I had forgotten about....

Thanks for the additional tips, I now recall hearing about the seed "jacket" hardening with time. I will try the nail file method before I germinate them...

dude u got to keep this thread goin,turn it into a grow thread,that way you will have tips b4 and it will b interesting to see you know what im saying?

Good idea wacky mack,

Here are some pics of a grow I am helping someone out with this year.

The fist pic is the top of an 8 1/2ft monster.

PS I will wait for next year to try some of those old seeds. I will report back when that happens.
