Officially an Assistant Scoutmaster :)

I'm not doubting your story I just find it tragic that they're so busy protecting children from "the gays" the pedophiles are slipping through the cracks because they identify themselves as heterosexual. Most people don't realize that us homos like big burly guys not boys.

edit: I'm very drunk. This is not a good topic for me tonight. I think I'll escort myself to the floor. :p

I ... was compelled. My hands; they moved involuntarily. That's my flypaper and I'm sticking to it. cn

Hey, good for you man! I was active in the Boy Scouts when I was younger... I managed to get my Eagle Scout just before I turned 18, and was a Den Leader for a cub-scout pack for two years... Good Times!!!

We've got a LOT of work to do.

Our Scout House is co-owned by the city and i'm lucky enough to have a close friend on city council. That being said, there are an estimated $20k worth of renovations needed to bring the place up to code. Electric, structural, plumbing, and ADA requirements. Given my Engineering background, i could do much of it myself and have contacts to solicit donated time and materials. Tbh, it would work as-is but there's so much liability involved that it has to be done.

Time to get some hustle on ;)

that all sounds like a great start. gotta be good having a friend on the city council...

in the renovation stage you should try to use some scouts for the easy stuff... giving them credit for community service time.

Most DEFINITELY! i learned today (which was how i've been treating it anyway for the last 10 months without real guidance) that this whole program is intended to be "boy-led". Hence the name. i'm here as a resource and for guidance and nothing more.

i have an engineering and construction job history so i've still got connects within the industry, access to top of the line survey equipment, draftsmen, architects, engineers, lawyers, etc. We should not only be able to do a lot by ourselves and earn community service hours but also earn a couple badges through map skills, navigation, engineering, etc. Still gotta do some research to figure out how to best benefit, motivate, and encourage our boys.

how many members do you have? it can be a challenge, but your work will be with those kids forever...

Right now, only 5. And that may shrink to 4 because our original, untrained and unsanctioned, leader and his son are not happy that after ten months of spinning our wheels trying to get going and his refusing our help we went to the Council and started doing our own thing. Basically, we politely committed mutiny.

We've got recruitment to do for sure but i see it as very doable. After all, i'm trying to get boys interested in knives, fire, and guns. How hard can it be? ;)

If we reach them before "the fumes" take over we'll do ok. You know, car fumes and perfumes?

EDIT: We also have 7 Cubscouts with their own leader but they have been losing interest too. Time to get these boys outdoors and have some fun!

haha, "the fumes". yup. they get pretty distracting... looking back, I'd say that one of the things I learned that i use everyday was the appreciation for the accomplishment of set goals. Like the view from the top of a mountain, after a hard uphill hike... or the advancement process. going through the ranks, working towards a set goal (Eagle).

That gave me a good laugh. Thank you. cn

Went through my ASM training today and completed it. Next is my OLC. Kinda bored with "learning how to survive in the wilderness" since i have developed my own methods through the years but am glad for a solid foundation.

REALLY taken back by the strictness of the guidelines and whatnot but glad they are there for the most part.
Well congrats!smileydance_zpsa6157452.gif
I clicked on this, kinda half expecting some goofy joke about eating your first brownie or something LOL

Ya, that would really be in bad taste, like somebody earlier here, joking about used to be a priest or something..... If we didn't know he was joking, that could'a turned bad in a hurry.
It must be pretty cool though, getting to impart your experience and knowledge on youngun's and know that one day something you taught them MAY save their hide (even though you hope they don't HAVE to use it).

The Boyscout's new preparedness motto is "Be ready for the zombie apocalypse."

Judging from this election cycle, there's a lot of zombies out there.

Part of my responsibility is to teach these young men to be self-reliant.

This mindset will play a big role in that.
