My first time stickin' it to the man!

First, let me just thank you for stopping by one of my only portals into my personal world. I also owe this entire community for the wealth of information they make availI'm not much of a journaler and I've never grown anything before but this was something I felt I had to do.

I watched Prohibition by brwndirtwarrior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXHfkXds0E0) and I was just completely moved. He basically put into words what I thought about the War on Drugs and even beyond that how I feel about my job, my life, society. I gained a clearer perspective.

Just a little about me personally; I have a full-time job, single, no kids. I live in a one bedroom apartment and the more I think about it, the more it feels like a prison cell. I'm tired of waiting in lines, paying taxes on the entirety of my income - sometimes two to three times on the dollar - and generally being an all-around cog in the machine. So, I'm gonna grow me some weed and smoke it :-P

Ok, on to the setup. I should add a disclaimer here that I don't actually *have* the seeds yet... I have them on order from nirvana (thanks, rollitup forums!) and they should be here soon. They are Snow White - feminized. In the meantime, I'm establishing my grow setup.

It's a small setup for 5 pots / 5 plants. It's basically panda film duct taped to my bulb hood and to the wall of my closet. No structural reinforcement. For now, I plan on keeping it like this we'll see if the girls can dig it.

Don't mind that random pot in the corner in Pic 2. I plan on using it as a 'control pot.' I.E. I will fill it with soil and leave it dry so that I know by weight what a dry pot feels like. I figure, this way, I wont overwater my babies. The potting soil you see in Pic 1 (lower right) is Fox Farm Ocean Floor. The guy at the 'ponics store told me it was good so I bought it. Anyone ever used it? You like it?

Pic 3 shows a 18'' Hydrofarm Active Air carbon filter that has a 2.5'' thick carbon wall. It's currently getting sucked on by a fan from the other side (properly so according to the mfg's recommendations). The fan is supposed to cycle about 240 CFM.

I found out later that the wall was a bad place for my thermometer probe. It now dangles mid-air.

Pic 4

I realize I will need saucers under the pots and proably some more film too. Don't worry, got it under control. They are 1 1/2 gallon pots if I remeber correctly, I was in a hurry when I bought them. I will use a paper towel to germinate my seeds, then, I will plant them in 16 oz solo cups and put 'em in the oven. Couple weeks later, I'll bring the big pots back and transplant into them.

Which brings us to the oven.

I can't seem to get the thing to stay below 83 or so. I'm working on a solution and i think I may try the DIY AC thing but I may not need to. We'll see.

Folks, I'd appreciate whatever feedback you have for me. Thanks again for lookin'

"You see, the war on marijuana is really a war of attrition between the idealogues and the realists. The idealogues think they can change the world by legislating morality. And the realists just wanna live and let live; letting self-determinism be the guiding hand of fate. Me? I just wanna grow my weed." - brwndirtwarrior, prohibition, ep 2. :weed:

You're an inspiration to us all!

looks mint, what type of light u got,ie 250w,ect,what type of seeds?

welcome to riu
Thanks for the kind words! I have a 400w lumatek digital ballast (it suppports either HPS or MH) hooked up to a 400w Hortilux mh currently.
But I also purchased a 400w Solarmax HPS that I will be converting to when I go to my 12/12 cycle.

As for the seeds, like I said, I don't exactly have them yet but I ordered from Nirvana and they are in 'stage 7 of transport' whatever that means.
It's my understanding that they have crossed into the US but I dont have a tracking number to find them  They are these seeds: http://www.nirvana-shop.com/snow-white-seeds-p-169.html.

It should be pretty sweet once its all up and going. I'm so stoked!!! :joint::mrgreen::bigjoint:

sounds good to me bro. you will just need some fans in your room to keep that air circulating and replenish the CO2 levels, it also helps strengthen the stems of your plants so they can hold a heavy load. what were your plans for nutrients? keep us posted. you should do fine.

Nice! Thanks, bro! At the time I took those pictures I actually had a fan I just hadn't pulled it out of the box and put in in there yet. I also have a blower hooked into my light hood that is pulling air away from my bulb.

However, it would seem that this is still not enough. I may need to just crank the AC in my apt to bring the base temp down or get some ducting and route it directly into my setup.

As for CO2, I am strongly considering buying some and working it in.

I never intended for my project to get as big as is is now!

Thanks for all the comments keep 'em comin'!!! :-D

Great things you had to say there. I can agree wholeheartedly. The funny thing is that here in America, we've never seemed so divided in my lifetime. I talk to people from my mom's generation (I'm in my 30s, btw) and they all say we need something that unites us. Oddly enough.. whether I talk to younger adults - Democrats or Republicans.. Conservatives or Liberals - they all seem to agree (in my region, anyways) that pot should be legal. In fact, I haven't heard a single person under 40 say it should be illegal in YEARS.

Great grow. Fuck the man over!

MY SEEDS CAME IN TODAY!!!!!!!!!!:clap::clap::clap:
So I guess that means we can officially call this -

DAY 1

This is how I got them (hardly stealthy but eh, who cares?):

This is how they look smallest to largest:

Sorry for the low quality pics. I'll be purchasing a new digital camera at some point throughout this grow.

OK. Got 'em all picked out. I went with the largest and darkest 4 seeds. I put them in a paper towel, folded it over, and lightly misted them with water. After that, I put them into a small baggie and placed them somewhere dark and warm :-P

Here's how they look all set up:

Ok! Write in and let me know what you guys think! I used tap water (its kinda hard and I know thats not good...) and I was a little concerned that the paper towel was made with bleached white paper and had little flowers and shit printed on it...

Digital ballast is definitely the way to go. I have an HPS bulb that I will be putting in place of the MH that I am currently using as soon I start flowering. The lumatek is awesome! Grow on!

indeed. i was so close to buying a shitty magnetic ballast, but opted to spend a little bit more money and get something that has been proven to last and be quality..

DAY 3

Ok, so I finally got my seeds to crack while germinating them in my custom-made envelope (lol, see first pic below). I decided since they're all female seeds I shouldn't have to worry about males if everything goes as planned.

I decided to name them all after Disney princesses because of the whole Snow White thing. I had to look all of their names up on Wikipedia because I couldn't remember them all. (Here's the link if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Princess) They are in choronological order from Disney and in order of root size, respectively. They are: Cinderella, Aurora (sleeping beauty), Ariel (the little mermaid), and Belle (beauty and the beast).

I put them approximately 5mm deep in my Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil inside of some cut up solo cups. I perforated the bottom of the cups to allow for drainage and placed them on an elevated platform in my grow room. They are about 20'' away from my 400w metal halide lamp. I'll be spraying them with water (I've yet to actually go purchase a PH kit - I know I need to, I'll do it today) about twice a day to keep the topsoil moist enough for the plants to grow through.

So here they are, my little princesses:

thanks for all your comments guys, keep posting!
