I use one of the griders with a mesh screen for catching the scuff or hippie crack or what ever you like to call it. I've noticed that the weed I buy in england that is lower grade or described as 'standard' here, always seems to put out way more crystals than other types of weed I buy (homegrown, hydro ect ect) Anyone else find this? If so anyone know why?

In the UK? There was a problem with silica being sprinkled in bags a few years back, to weight them. Also heard of lead being sprinkled in bags. I think that was urban legend.
The keif (hippie crack) you're "catching" might not be keif, it's either particulate or dry crumbled bud. As a general rule, if your bud isn't sparkly with trichs, and you are getting a lot in your keif catch, it's more likely than not ground dry plant matter.

Well, careful with it. Seriously, watch for too many "crystals" on compressed bud. That's normally not what you'll see on cheap compressed bud. If you do, either it's your lucky day, or your lungs that you are jeopardizing. You're on a grower's site. I'd seriously suggest reading around, and growing. Much better quality control, and you know what you're smoking is as clean as it is going to get.

I, too, have a keif-catching grinder and have smoked countless pounds of crappy 'street weed' in the UK over the years. The weed I used to buy was usually bone dry, and would essentially crumble between your fingers. Passing it through a grinder would fill up the keif chamber super quick. Like the stuff you're describing, it looked ok, albeit dry and crumbly, and wasn't particularly fragrant, nor was it sticky.
It makes me wonder what these cats are growing, and how lazy they are about managing it. It isn't much (if at all) harder to grow a decent strain instead of the bland junk they're putting out. Setting up my small, personal grow was a no-brainer. I don't even check my keif chamber anymore - I'm usually way too baked to be dealing with that noise.

I've been told its grown under conditions that maximise yeild that compromise other characteristics of the weed such as odour. Spose its essentially the same as the difference between intensively factory farms chickens vs free range, both ways you get chicken, just one is not as good in many aspects. God im waffling, should probably stop smoking and go to bed! haha

Been growing 2.5yrs and have yet to see a tricomb, reading tells me tricombs are 'not' a sign of quality. My genetics come from some deadly bagseed and can say it's at least 14%, and 'no, none' tricks, lots of swollen calexes and amber pistels, this is what i call kief.

So, um, I was quoting see4 and agreeing with him. No trichomes = no "nectar." You ARE doing it wrong, unless by "grow" you mean "buy brick weed and decompress it in the steamer and then hang it to dry." Yeah, those "trichomes" are directly related to the amount of THC in your final product. They contain the bulk of the THC in your final product, and if you are growing weed without them, you are growing "hemp."

From the amount of your posts your probably one of the first to start all this tric nonsence. Tricombs are "highly over-rated" you can have tons and no thc or vise versa like mine.
I just looked up these kief catchers and i'm still laughing, one bowl, one 'dry' bud, two fingers and presto kief. By the way you should take the sticks out first. It's all there.
You offended my growing abilities for some freek trait, not nice.

I knew this one guy who put glass shards in the weed to make it look like more trichomes/weight. It sounds awfully close to what youre describing.

So, let me try to understand your point of view, because it appears my one liner bent you a little out of shape. And I figured if you read minnesmoker's comment, you would have understood my (his) point on this matter. But I guess you did not.
Let me try to explain it in more simple terms. Say you have a 67 Camaro, totally sexy, black on black, and it treats you right, it has a small block 250 in it. That's your bud. ..... My bud.. same 67 Camaro, but it has 22inch rims, tinted windows, tv's in the headrest, the car talks to me, and has a big block 450 under the hood. That's the difference between bud with and without trichs.
Does that clear things up?
