sounds like fungus gnats. If so make sure soil gets all the way dry before watering and put up a yellow pest strip. There are tons of ways to take them out but they are annoying!

No Pest Strips..They will kill/prevent almost anything from gnats to spider mites. You can purchase them at home depot or walmart
Good Luck

I hate those little fuckers, the strips only help with adults...doesn't kill the larvae. You have to break their cycle, soak 1/2 a dunk(crushed first)per gallon of water overnight...then use every time you water. Long-term use of Bti has not caused any harm to my girls.

thanks alot i guess i have to try that no other way around it so i guess it wont kill it all in one shot?

what will kill/prevent?
NO PEST STRIPS

If you kill the adults off the cannot reproduce, once the larvae hatch the vapor from the no pest strips will kill them. The no pest strips are from Hotshot and it says they last 4 months but I change mine out every two months just to safe(I havent had gnats or spider mites since)

No, it won't. You have to repeat the application 2-3 times. B/C I have no way of knowing which containers have larvae, I now water everything with Bti, that includes my starter soil before I even put seedlings in it. Once you break the cycle, then you can top dress with sand etc to prevent future infestations. And yes, you'll need pest strips to kill adults as well.

Fungus gnats, one of the main reasons I switched to DWC.

It helps if you can water from the bottom of the plant.

possibly nematodes would be less hazardous to your and whoever might consume your products health.

sprinkle cinnamon on top of the soil after you water. can use corn meal too. I prefer cinnamon. get it at the 99cent store for ... 99 cents :) or you can put a sand layer on top of the soil.

I just let all the plants in the area dry out, and sometimes add sand to the tops of the pots, because sand dries really fast, and the larvae need a wet place to live...

And nematodes are awesome! They really do work. But if you continue to overwater you will continue to have the gnats

I have have been using a technique for the last two years and it works. It's called sand. One 2 inch layer of play sand on top of your soil will not allow any bug to penetrate to the soil to lay their eggs. Yes there are wholes in the bottom of pots but bugs are stupid for the most part. A bag of sand is $3 and you can cover ten 3gal pots. Trust me on this. You will never have gnats again. I haven't. If you have an infestation, it will take about two weeks to kill them all. There is an art to pooring water onto sand without digging a hole in it. To start off, place a small bowl into your pot and poor the water into the bowl. It can be a hassle for those who don't have finesse or patience. But I love it, I don't have bugs. It's super cheap too. The picture here shows sand on top of the dirt and there is a little dirt on top but that doesn't hinder the sands effectiveness. I have no gnats. IMG_2546.jpg

This is great for prevention, however it does absolutely nothing to prevent the hatching larvae found in many of the bagged products we all purchase.
