I need to know what kind of poison to use to kill a small maple. About 7 in in diameter. i dont want it cut down, i want the cover without the leaves.

There are lots of myths about this - some probably do work (like painting creosote on a stump). However, the surest way is to apply a root killing herbicide like Glyphos onto the leaves of any shoots that come up from the stump (either of the ivy or the tree). The active chemical is transported down to the roots by the plant's own respiratory system (a bit like you or I breathing in air) at which point it kills the plant outright. You may need to apply it a few times if the shoots reappear - each time, the plant will be weakened further until it dies.

As a bonus, Glyphos becomes inert when it makes contact with the soil.

You can buy glyphos based chemicals at any good garden centre (it may be branded as something else, so be sure to ask) and a cheaper option will be to go to an agricultural supplies outlet. It is what foresters and farmers routinely use

i used to take a drill bitt and drill 3 holes deep into the tree.. when this was done i'd cut off a peice of rag that would fit into the hole and soak it in gas.. then place it in the holes that i drilled... 4 holes should work..

not sure if its a myth or not but ive herd to drive copper nails in to it or drill a few holes and fill em with salt

yeah i'd say the salt would work but did you ever see gasoline kill grass.. a rag filled with it jamed in a tree works great... but you could also drill a few extra holes in it and fill them wit salt then you have a way better chance of sucess

the hippie organic way is to put a pile of soil about 3ft up the tree it rotes the bark and kills the tree but when all else fails chainsaw the SOB

yep the glyphos or roundup (same stuff)will work fine just drill some holes in the trunk above the ground and pour in the poison .

i remember learning about some ring barking or something like that
you cut off the bark in a circle all around the tree and it cant transport shit up the trunk so it all dies off... but yep not sure how quick it would work

cut a ring all the way around the trees trunk make sure u cut through the bark and the thin film layer that the plant uses to carry nutes up thatll kill it good

i heard if you pound in a few pure copper pennies or some copper wiring to the base of the trunk it will kill any tree eventually.

thats all bs crap.

I have a 20 year old ironwood tree in my front yard that was wired when it was a sapling with copper wire ( to shape it) the tree has grown over the copper wire, and now a shitload of copper wire is lodged like 5 inches into its trunk/ main branches, and that thing is doing great.

This works, I don't remember where but I saw it on tv. Possibly on Discovery or History channel.

i like the weed-eater idea. Drill holes in the stump holes and pour some vinegar in there. Use the undiluted (not diluted for canning) usually 9% acidity. lowes or Homedespot sometimes carry it with much higher acidity levels but it is ridiculously expensive for vinegar. Kills everything but hackberries and poison ivy.

OK, want to get all serious, place a picture of a sidewalk in front of it, and ask your wife to go to the store.
