Powell tried to talk them out of invading Iraq, but he says that it became clear that it was going to happen. He was also given questionable evidence of nuclear stuff in Iraq, but he was told it was solid intel. I think he was lied to and deceived by Bush and Cheney and bad intel. When he gave his UN speech, I got the impression that he completely believed everything he said. But...garbage in, garbage out. Had he not believed what he said, he would not have been so convincing, and had he not been so convincing, things might have been different.

Did you really find Powell's words on the floor of the UN convincing? I dunno. In retrospect, playing Monday Morning Quarterback, I didn't. He seemed to have been fumbling.

Also, the outright disregard for the Iraqi rep who was begging for more searches, etc. Powell did not address that.

Still, though, I agree with you. I'd love to see Powell back as Sec of State. But I want him to come clean. I want him to come right out and say he was wrong, even if it means "only" admitting to being used and manipulated. I'll take that.

Agree with comments re Obama if he does appoint Powell somewhere in the cabinet.

I've been waiting for Powell to redeem himself to me for years, ever since he left office. I want him to come clean about the lies told on the floor of the UN. I know that he has and feels a duty to be loyal to his commander in chief, but I'm disgusted by this whole thing. If Powell knew it was all lies re Saddam's INability to build a nuclear bomb, and that the Iraqi UN rep was begging for more time to allow UN inspectors in, then that trumps the loyaly to the commander in chief. To defend him on that one would be about the same as defending the guys at the My Lai Massacre, who all just went along with it.

But whatever the case, I'll take Powell's endorsement. I do think he put a lot of thought into it. FWIW, I used to have a lot of respect for Powell, and when Bush first "won" in 2000, I was delighted to hear that Powell was secretary of state.

In case anyone's not seen the article yet, here it is, along with some quotes from Powell on his respect for McCain, along with his misgivings. Note how Powell brings up McCain's inexperience with the economy. Very good points. Note also that Powell gives credit where credit is due re McCain.

He's a well spoken man. He just screwed us all when he went along with that bullshit at the UN. I'm still waiting for that expose from him.
