ok so just to start off with this is not something that i just threw in and call it, IT WORKS.
this is something i have been doing now for about 2 years. 100% safe to start of with. i would not be on here telling you that its safe and its not, family does not do that to family and you all are like family to me... so the videos says it all. but my ? to you all is, is just how much money would you have saved buy eliminating unneeded ballasts.

1000wtt MH BULB in a 1000wtt HPS BALLAST

 
Have you tested the lumen output of those bulbs after 6-12 months of operation and compared it to the lumens produced by a new bulb, and against those of an identical bulb used in the correct ballast?

ok.. i just had a thought you all might like... based on the idea this works 100% of the time with 100% of all bulbs and ballasts...

you start out with purchasing a 1000w ballast and a 400w MH, 600w or 1000 MH (whichever you prefer to veg with) and a 1000w HPS bulb.... so 1 ballast and 3 bulbs... you start out germination with the 400w bulb... since germining plants dont need as much light... switch to the 600w or 1000w MH once the girls are germed and ready to veg... and then switch to the 1000w HPS for flower...

not only would this save you money on electricity, since you can switch to a smaller bulb early in life and increase bulb strength as needed.. but it would also save you money on replacing bulbs since you arent usin each individual bulb as long as you normally would.. not to mention being able to get rid of or not purchase any other ballast other than the 1000w...

but i asked MG, and wonder if anyone else has a thought.. do you think the intitial firing power surge is greater on an MH ballast than an HPS ballast?? could it possibly work with an MH on and HPS ballast, but fry and HPS on an MH ballast??


personally ill just go with the digital ballasts.. they are a lot cooler running and can run both anyways...
 
Yeah I would prefer digital ballasts and I might upgrade to them next time round. I just dont see the issue anyway as I get the conversion bulbs at the same price as the HPS bulbs so Ive never even bothered pricing a MH bulb. Either way im still not convinced MH is any better anyway.
 
anymore MH really isnt any better than HPS.. almost all the HPS grow lamps are enhanced with the blue spectrum anyways... so they can be used all the way through with just as much success as going with MH during veg and HPS during flowering..

my ballast i can put my nand on and leave it their..

i have a 400wtt mh ballast in my veg room. im going to replace it with a 1000wtt hps ballast so i can switch from 400wtt mh buld to 1000wtt mh bulb 30 days into veg.


m.blaze that is you standerd mh bulb... i am going to upgrade to the horalux blue

you have to remember back in the old days thats all thay had for indoor lighting waz MH. i've sayed that b4... the MH bulb is way brighter but does not put out the lumens the hps bulb does. thats the onlydiffrence between the two bulbs...

Well so far thats the conclusion ive come up with and you explained it very well. Infact ive found my HPS bulbs to do better than the MH as far as yield goes. It just makes me wonder why people would bother buying them if they are no better. I will be trying them once more and if I see no benefits from them then I wont bother using them again.

thats bcuz of the lumens diffrence and yes the spectrum too.
 
i have 2 x 400w ballasts in my veg room along with my other lights.. i have hps bulbs in them now.. im might run MH next run just to see if there is a difference.. but my gut says ill end up back at hps either way...

ya thats what i have been told buy the guys at my grow shop when i tell them what ballast i have. we all go threw life listing to others saying this can not be done, or thats ballast is a piece of shit but true fact they just want to sell you something just so they can stay in business:blsmoke:

Im guessin you would end up back with the HPS just like I will but id be interested to see your results and opinions.

oh i definatly agree there.. hps is the way to go to flower... unless i somehow able to purchase 6 grand in the floros like i have now i am still going with HPS for the new flower room once i get to that point.. and same reason i am using the hps now.. i can veg and flower with it...

yeah i am curious to see the difference... i hear a lot of good things about MH.. so once i get my perpetual grow rooms set up i am going to veg the same amount of time with MH and HPS and see which works best.. of course ill have the HO floros i have going too.. but should be able to tell a difference either way...

i did find out that a 400w MH is way more efficient than a 600w MH by , on average, 20 lumens per watt, and that 1000w is the most efficient.. which is almost opposite of HPS... where 600w is most efficient, followed by the 1000w, then the 400w and below... this isnt total lumen output obviously.. just lumens per watt...
