How to run 8x1000w?

As Virulient says - hire an electrician. Another suggestion here would be the "Ask an Electrician" thread, in which he'll probably tell you to hire an electrician.

MMMM it's actually very easy to fix your problem. First, unless your actually running 16 systems you don't need to operate the 8KW at the same time. I have to asume you have good space avaliable so you could just split 4KW 12/12 in different rooms so you'd run 4kW all day long, it's even good for keeping the electricity bill stable while doubling production capacity at the same time. Second, if you run your ballast at 220V you'd be using half the amperage than 110V, I've taken reads of magnetics and digitals of every single ballast avaliable from 250 to 1000W and none excedes 8.5 runing at 110 and 5.3 @ 220V. So you'd need 2 breakers of 20amp for one room/tent and 2 more for the other and just balance the charges to feed the other gear. Also you dont need to buy that box. Get an electrician to set you up a thick cable from the main panel to your growing room were you (and everybody at this scale) should install an auxiliary panel with the 20 amps breakers. Remember to take your feed straight from the street line before the main breaker so the rest of the place remains safe in case of overload.

You got readings of 1166 watts and 935 watts on 1000w ballasts?

Also, you're recommending running 4000w on a 20 amp circuit? Even if you mean 220v, that's a capacity of 4400w. You aren't going to cool those 4000w of lights? Or run ventilation? Or fans? Not to mention a 1000w ballast actually runs a little higher than 1000w. People like this should take my original advice......call an electrician and just tell them what you need. He/she will make it happen.

I think he was joking, I hope he was joking. I dont see how taking a feed before the main breaker will keep anything safer. I think its dangerous and for 8kw not needed at all.

50amps is enough for 8kw of light at 220v plus room for fans and equipment. A 6/3 wire is adequate to supply it. #6 being the gauge and #3 being the # of conductors.

im running 10 and I still consider it a average to small grow. when you get into the 20 to 30 light range then your doing sumthing

Average, by definition, would mean the majority of growers use ~10 lights. I would say the majority of growers are small-time growers, growing for their personal supply. It's kinda the same as saying "I own a mercedes, but I'd consider it average because I COULD be driving a lambo" Nah bro, you still got a benz, it's def not average. Same applies, nah bro, you got 10,000 watts and should feel fortunate you were put in the position to have a grow that nice. I'm having to rebuild my shit after I came back in town and all my equipment was gone... I'm lucky to have the 5 plants I have right now.... That's my 2 cents at least. Plus, I'd rather talk about this than the original topic considering it's dumb idea after dumb idea after dumb idea and the OP is MIA. :D

yeah your right. let me reword. within the people that I know that grow mine is average and know sum that I consider big. I think 10 lights is peenuts.

No dude please bother to read the whole thing right before bashing an opinion. You got me wrong:
I recommended two 20 amps breakers per room, you could feed 2Kw plus some gear with one, and 2k on the other + more stuff flawlessly. That's a total of 4 20 amp breakers offering a capacity of 80 amps to play with, which is plenty, easy and cheap to set up. Also I recommended the breakers to be in an auxiliary panel where the grow room is.

Furthermore I do take my feed rom the main panel braker coming from the street as my house consumes a lot and there's no headroom for the grow op in my main breaker and it was cheaper to do this than to get a bigger braker. The job was done by an electrician not me and he even measured the charges with all the lights and the house runing and it was dandy. If your main breaker has plenty of headroom you could be save just by hooking the wires to the bars and scrweing the ground to the main panel ports. I don't live in the US but I've been told that regular houses have capacities assigned so if you do this don't go above the capacity of street measurer. Anyways I'm far from expert at this subject, I'm just telling you what worked perfectly for me. There's a lot of ways to do this anyways.

What I really wanted to point out was the splitting of the systems, not wiring methods, and Virulent I did recommend an and hired an electrician.

Agreed, I suggest it just in case his main breaker wasn't enough to power the house and the grow op at the same time which is usually the case when you want to freaking run 8kW of lights + gear, I mean, no house comes prepared for that. You could always get a bigger breaker and wire to the bars but it's expencier and more dangerous IMO, you just have to keep it under 100 amps Total so the street measurer don't fry. .50 mps @ 220 to only power the GR is right as you said

Yep, that's a pretty accurate calculation, the cleaner the current the more stable it gets but it certainly fluctuates. I got Furman condicioners usually used for audio appliances to solve this for a friend, no more fluctuations, flickering or burnt bulbs.

In my experience I haven't seen them fluctuate THAT much. Might be one of the cheaper brands, I dunno. Obviously current reading fluctuate, but fluctuating by 200 watts? Never seen that.....that's pretty sketchy.

The thing is I don't know any electrician personally, and I'm not really cool with the idea of letting some random guy come in and do this kind of work.

you guys are retarded..i rain 8 1000s and it was a walk in the park...first you need is a LT-8 by greenhouse..its a 8 light power box with a build in timer...then you need a 40 to 50 foot 50 to 60 amp 240 line to run from your dryer power hookup in your laundry room to your grow room..then hook the fucker up and injoy..l.however when your running that many lights..that would be good for a 16 hood flip box...8 1000x watt ballast running 16 hoods on and off... just split the room in half ..a light lock in the middle.. and now your up too 16k..bam.

The formula for finding wattage is very simple.

Watts = Volts x Amps


So lets say you have a 1000 watt stero system in your car. You wanna know how many amps that its sucking down.

Amps = Watts / Volts

Since a car battery is 12 volts: 1000W / 12V = 83.3 Amps.


Ok now lets say Uncle Jimbo has put in a 30 Amp breaker for his massive year round Christmas light display that his neighbors are threatening to sue him over. You want to find out how many watts of lights that Jimbo can put up before it blows the breaker.

Watts = Amps x Volts

Since house current is 120 volts: 30A x 120V = 3600 Watts or 3.6 Kilowatts
(Yipes Jimbo!)


Lets say a PSU puts out 17 amps and 204 watts on a certain rail. You want to find the voltage.

Volts = Watts / Amps

So 204W / 17A = 12 Volts.
