How do you dispose your used lighting systems?

I have some old light systems I'd love to get rid of, and selling them is not an option. We're talking about 400W HPS lights with built-in ballasts, originally intended for outdoor greenhouse growing. They have always been impractical and I would love to get rid of them. Would I "need" to entirely disassemble them and take them a few pieces at a time to the metal bin in order not to attract any attention? Do we have any useful components (capacitators etc.) in a ballast I could salvage for other use?

Yea, interesting.. The bulbs are likely toxic. My local dump takes these types of items for free. I'd just say I found it or used it to start my garden indoors.

you don't have to say shit when you dump garbage its guilty people who tend to open their mouth before asked.. remember its trash and thats it.. god left in house attic when you bought it left in apt closet whatever again you don't have to explain yourself to anyone

I have "special trash". It compiles in bags in my laundry room until "trash day". My refuse technicians arrive promptly at 800 AM on Friday mornings.

Guess who has a shit ton of 3.0 ML contractor grade black garbage bags out in the bins at 7:55????
Fuck. I tossed my old carbon filter that way.

dude take the shit to a shady scrap yard. You'll get money for the stuff. tell them you took down lights behind your house, a barn, workshop, whatever. go dump the shit off. and get paid.

The ballast should weigh in as 'motors' at a scrap yard. Inonce stripped out a louad of 4' flouro ceiling lights and weighed the ballast/motors in separately from the rest. I got £40 for them. If i'd left them in one piece i'd have got about £5 for the lot.
You sure you cant just sell them? Are they knackered or are you trying to keep a low profile?

I live in a small town and I want to keep a low profile. Also, if there are any useful components in the ballast I can use, then I would love to salvage them before I throw it away.

Fair enough. If you bust them open you'll be able to see what's easily salvageable. My guess would be the capacitors/ignitors and remove the coils to weigh in as scrap. You can say they're out of 'some old motors' if you're worried about it.
Seems a pity really. I'd like a few more lights at the moment! If I was nearby I'd help you get rid of them...

you guys are funny its not fucking illegal to own growing equipment nor does it warrant a search. quit being fucking paranoid and just go about your normal day.. I've already had cops search my home for unrelated things... fuck them they can't do shit and second its not against the law to have carbon filters lights or growing medium holy moly

It's certainly not illegal to own or throw away growing equipment no, but especially big HPS lights and carbon filters are still somewhat of a give-away.
