This one think you are right about the first part. 30-10-10 seems a little drastic, must not be if you didn't have issues. I'm not growing in soil so that is probbly the difference. I do have it on excellent authorities, the ph of your soil and adjusting the ph of the water to accomadate it is very important if you want maximum production in soil. Not understanding this may not kill your plant, you may get a low yeild and blame the 'soil grow'. I believe you would get a better yield if the ph is constantly monitored without adding nutes than you will get adding nutes at an improper ph. Maybe one of the 'dirt bags' , FDD, Gk etc. will weigh in on this. VV
