good soil...??

im a n00bie to growing and im looking for some good soil to grow with. i know it should be neutral (between 6 and 7 on the Ph scale) and not have any mites in it. There are plenty of brands at the store that are all the perfect acidity level, but ive often heard they all have mites in them. can anyone suggest to me a favorite brand that isnt overly-priced...?? and is there anything else anyone can suggest to look for when choosing soil??

any advice is much appreciated. thanks to all

a lot of yanks go for foxfarm stuff and seem more than happy with it ( i dont think i can get it in the u.k). i use miracle grow but sum ppl hate it( its got sum nutes in it and a few people have had nute burn with it, i havent). plagron is another make. theres just too many to say so i would just pick one and run with it. if i was in the u.s i would definetly go for foxfarm stuff lotsssa people rave about it.

If you have a HOME DEPO around where you live go there and get the SCOTTS potting soil its 10 bucks and works GREAT

look for seedling soil its the shit cant get anything better imo, its sandy aswell so it has awesome drainage but it costs alittle but more then your average soil. or u can just go buy some coco for your medium most 25litre bags are precooked so no nastys

Even though everybody thinks it's evil stuff, I've been using MG soil for 6 months now, and haven't had any problems. I always add about 15-20% perlite, and it works great. But, I'm jumping on the Fox Farms bandwagon and using it for the next generation. I already have it here at the house, so i can't wait to test it out.

Oh yeah, I've had fungus gnats ever since I've been using MG soil. The place where i buy it keeps it out in the weather, so it gets gnats in it. That's the main reason I'm switching.

The best soil u can use is the FoxFarm Ocean Forest.. it is pretty expensive if u can find it.. i have to drive 45 mins and its priced at $25 a bag.. but being on many forums it seems like the FFOF is the most praised with the best results.. i just started using it.. i can keep u posted on my grow if u want. Keep doing research dude its the best thing for a noob like urself and I.. :bigjoint:

i think im gunna go with Fox Farm's. everywhere I've read, it seems to be the most valued amongst growers. only problem i have left right now is that i'm a poor college kid and i just found out that we get apartment checks every sixth week of every quarter :(

there is actually a couple of good soils out there and is mostley organic. Like some fox farm product and also happy frog. Black gold is actually really good cause it doen't have any added nutrients so you have to add yourself. Also peace of mind works well to.

i tried using MG when i first strated my plants a few of them didnt make it and turn bright yellow and was stunted...So i transfered a couple to FFOF and left a couple in the MG the ones in the MG did not make but the ones in FFOF blew up they really love the shit....I dont know im not one to ride the wagon but FFOF is some good shit its only like 18 bucks and some change at the shop i go to...

MG seed starting mix (5-1-5) and half the price of ocean forest.

The bottom right plant is 14" tall and has a 1/2" thick trunk already. The top right got too dry, which is why it looks a little wilted. I made a watering mistake that hurt the plant and I didn't blame the soil.

wombat i dont think u will be dissappointed with the FoxFarms.. im sure alot of the other soils work.. but the FoxFarm soils is like crack to the plants.. good luck homie.:bigjoint:

I like roots or ff ocean forest. but yes they will have gnats or other pests in them. almost all of them will have some sort of bug in them. Just grab some go gnat or other organic pesticide to keep the problem to a minimum. gnat larvae will do some root damage but its not gonna kill off your crop. There are also synthetic pesticides that will eliminate EVERYTHING. Just make sure u spray before you start to flower. I believe you should start with a quality soil...you won't have to feed your plants for about a month. I've used both and had great results, but my last bag of roots had a lot of gnats so im switching to FF. There are numerous organic methods too...just read. Chopped banana peels will keep aphids away and ladybuds are the shit. THEY EAT EVERYTHING!!!!
