Only one way to find out if those plants are keepers in terms of crossing them and that's by doing it and by growing out the offspring. And in any case, a seed run is good experience too and having plenty of seeds to expirement with is fun as well.

I'm pollinating a couple of buds on all female candidates and then use only the seeds of the best. Sometimes a plant that wasn't the best during pollination does create the best buds so just want to make sure I have offspring from all.

If you want to do a really good pheno hunt cross two plants from your first generation of seeds again, into an F2 and grow those out. You will discover a whole new level of cannabis addiction. :D

Actually if both parents are F1 you may see a lot of variation in your first generation already (making it a double cross). Anyway it's really fun to observe the for F2 typical segregation.

I did one of those fill the jar runs earlier this year with female clones only, of the CH, so I smoked that a lot. Grapefruit-ish. In my P cross the chunk pine taste dominated so no grapefruit. But as expected, in my F2 I had a plant that tasted exactly like the CH. It's just weird smoking it after smoking the CH so much because it smells and tastes nearly the same as the CH but has the indica golfball bud structure from the chunk instead.

That would be a trip - do you notice any difference in the high?

The one that had Chunk-like buds (the AAO in my journal) but CH-taste had a more chunk-like indica/body stoned effect. So yes, tasted like CH but not the effect from the CH. One could derive from that that bud structure genes are not linked to the effect/cannabinoid genes, at least not entirely, and are located on different chromosomes.

That last thing is what it's really about. If the parents you use are fairly stable then so will the resulting offspring in the first generation. You may not have a lot of variety to really hunt for exceptional phenos. A simple example: You got a tall purple plant and a short green plant. If you cross those into F1, you might get all tall green plants (one phenotype cause in this theoretic case tall and green are dominant). In F2 however, you'd get some tall purple, short purple, tall green, and short green. The amount of different combinations (phenotypes) increase exponentially for every non-linked trait/gene.

My point is, if the offspring of the SBA doesn't turn out to be great or what you want, cross two of them again cause that's where the most phenotype variation usually is.

Turned out to be a little hard taking pics and collecting pollen at the same time :) So in short, I wait for a male ball to pop and open its umbrella, and then within a day, hours, I hold a small container below the ball and shove it around the bananas and wiggle it without shaking the rest of the branch. Sounds nuts now that I wrote it down  I spill very little though (doesn't blow side ways) and it's directly in the container I can store it in, like the ones below, DNA's seeds came in them. Also easy to put a brush in there without flipping it... anyone who brushed pollen knows what I mean.

So after you reach F2 stage, you'd have to grow out quite a few to find your winner tho right cuz there'll be more variation in the phenos but also more chances of getting traits you're looking for because some of the recessive genes that would have never showed up in the F1s can pop their head up again in the F2s?

Thanks Polo, and likewise. :)

Yeahhh man. I try to sound smart, but Sat really is lol.
lol maybe I'm just more experienced at sounding smart. :D

Exactly. Example with one trait, aka monohybrid:
upload_2014-12-30_23-41-41.png

And the classic example of a dihybrid (two traits of interest)
upload_2014-12-30_23-42-40.png

How many plants you need to grow out to find a winning pheno is partly a matter of luck. If in that dihybrid example above the goal is to find smooth round and green phenos, 3 out of 16 are suitable (phenotypes) for cloning. Only 1 out of 16 has the best genotype for breeding the trait true though (the RRyy below the center). Obviously there are usually more than 2 traits we care about so the diversity is much larger too. But that's a good thing when it comes to pheno hunting.

And it does not mean you can only get offspring that is a different combi of the same old traits, there's a lot more going on. You might get plants that look like one of the parents of the SBA, with some of the GG traits added. And some gene combis can lead to new things all together. I look forward to follow your new addiction in 2015 :bigjoint:

Kinda like we can look like our grand parents or our great-grandparents, sometimes we just don't know. We might look like one grandparent Yet have the size or shape of another grandparent or uncle or great uncle or aunt. I don't have a lot of breeding experience but I have read quite a bit and that's how I explain it to myself. I substitute litters of dogs or family tree type shit to understand. Oops, here I am high again and rambling. I'm not sorry...

New Year, New Set of plants put into flower. Decided to just throw 1 of the GG 1 clones in the flowering tent along with 2/3 of the GG 3 clones. Might as well get a jump start, seeing how these are gonna be longer flowering girls n I sure as hell don't want to have another 6 ft plant in the tent. Tied the original GG 1 back down to around 4.5 ft on each of the 4 main colas. Pics coming n about n hour >>

GG 1 still having a tough time. It's drying out way too fast. Got a decent amount of spaghnum peat moss in the mix, but I think it might need a bigger pot or something...little late now. At least it's starting to throw out fat pom poms all over - the odd thing is this one is growing trichs all over the stems but hardly any on it's leaves. First time seeing that lol
GG-1---1-1-15_A.jpg GG-1---1-1-15_B.jpg

GG 3 doing the damn thing - It's got flowers that are only about 1/3rd the size of the other 3 girls so far. Not banking on a huge yield from this one. Thinking it'll be some good smoke tho.
GG-3---1-1-15_A.jpg GG-3---1-1-15_B.jpg

SBA sexy as ever - Gotta say i'm impressed with this fine young lady. She's got veeery subtle nutrient burn on the tips of her leaves I think, but nothing I'm concerned about lol:
Sweet-Black-Angel---1-1-15_A.jpg

Threw that other 600w HPS up on the other side of the tent  As much as I'm still a noob this shit is starting to look pretty legit down here lol. Prolly gonna take a break from expanding the setup and just work on dialing in what I do have. One thing I learned from making music is that more equipment does not always = better results. You actually gotta figure out how to use the shit first :bigjoint:

GG1 is in a fabric pot, right? Look into the S.I.P method of watering. I never tried it but look into it and see if it would help out your situation. It uses a wicking action to supply moisture. I looked into it a couple of years ago when I needed to leave the ladies for a week, I ended up staying home so I didn't do it. Don't hold your breath but I'll try to dig up the link.

Yeah she's actually in one of those pots you recommended to me. They're fucking nice - come with the trays n everything. The 'smartpot' brand ones were good, but shorter and wider. Digging the tall narrow ones, can fit more of them in the smaller tent a lot easier. Damn good deal too. I needa find that link again so I can pick up some more of em

I like those pots better than smart pot brand for the same reason, I like deep better than wide(no homo). If you did get them from amazon look in your past orders to find them.

That's dope. The still standing water kinda makes me worried, but just to tie em over for times when you can't tend to the plants, that looks like a really effective method. I gotta grab some perlite anyways so I might as well grab an extra bag n rig this up for her to see how it works out

That is most certainly what she said.

Ohhh yeahh! ...derp. Good call. Just checked n they're in the history. kinda horrified at how many other things are too :o i needa chill out a little bit
