Yet there is no reason why we can't make the pie bigger for everyone- except that those in power would have to share it.

Have you ever noticed how those with the most power and money are generally least willing to share?

That basic conflict is what's driving American politics today.

Kinda yeah. But kinda they are just looking at things in terms of their lifetimes. In the long run, they are dead. They are selfish pricks who could not give a fuck about what comes after. They die soon. You'll see. The torch will be passed. It is just a matter of how much burns.
