For me, being in a record book has no appeal. I don't fish to impress strangers. Bragging rights among friends is all my circle seeks.
I have fished with a multiple record holder and found it to be an unpleasant experience. He and his friends lost the fun of fishing and spent all their time bitching and whining about other competitive fishermen/record chasers.
To each their own I guess. We all must find our own path to happiness.

I set the record as an impulsive short term goal - I had the equipment & had figured out the fish plus how to do it & it worked.
As I said it has since been eclipsed & I'm good with that.
I fish for fun, food and companionship - not for bragging rights (even among friends).
PS: The fish was eaten by my family.

It's one thing to chase an impulse like you did. I get that, and could even see doing something like that in the right circumstances and location.
The people I had to listen to during a multiple hour drive to and from the lake were consumed by the competition. It wasn't about nature, it was about showing some other guy that they were better(if that meant adjustable ethics, so be it). They couldn't imagine a day spent catching hammer handles or pan-frys just for the joy of it, it was all about winning. They were like the guys that take golf too seriously and have an excuse for every miss and manage to shit on everyone else's good shots, the guys that snap a putter or two in a rage every season.
Like I said, to each their own, but there's no way I would ever share a vehicle or an ice tent with these guys again.

I know it’s bullshit....and yes I’ve done some reading and there is not one documented, proven case of a shark in the Great Lakes.....no offence!

I used to charter salmon trips and people were thrilled to catch anything for the most part. As soon as the salmon hunt starts (1 million dollar derby) it changes and big matters lol. I actually don’t care if I catch anything because, it’s not the fish, it’s the fishing.

I don't know what I would describe myself as desperate or keen maybe desperately keen?
I spent 42 hrs in 3 days during a spate trying to catch salmon, conditions were perfect it was a case of persevering and persevere I did, I hooked and lost two before the river fell in I didn't actually land one until 10/11 days later after more long days on the river, I'm in fricking agony with my back but I endure it for the chance of a salmon.

Nothing more fun to fish with than a flyrod, for me , plus you can get smoked up and tie some outrageous looking "flies".....great fun.......just got a bunch of peacock feathers......great for mosquito legs and color.

I usually do a bit then switch to spinning depending on the situation and legalities. I’ve fished the Kuijak in Alaska a few times and a couple of rivers on the Kenia for chinook which was unbelievable as they run in at high tide and are fresh and quite spunky lol. I love to eat a couple of gummies and get creative, tie up what I call crushed clown patterns lol.
