DIY with Quantum Boards

What’s the consensus here? I began reading the first 100 pages and realized I was in 2016... what’s the best option for a 3x3x8h tent in 2019? Cobs or these led strips?

Has anyone cut one of the heat sinks before? I have a triple and double heat sink and would like to turn the triple into a double. And recommended ways of cutting it?
If you only have a sawzall or hack saw, WD 40 can help with cutting the aluminum but a bar of soap is even better. Just run the blade on the soap every so often then keep cutting. Use a fine toothed metal blade as well, and wear gloves aluminum is very messy when it gets cut

I've replaced most of my lights with Quantum Boards from HLG. I cut my power consumption in 1/2 and increased my harvest. I still have one COB light but I'll be replacing that soon also. QBs give me more headroom over cobs.

Good point!!! I don't really know cause I've never used cob lights before... Strips either for that matter... Guess it comes down to what you see the plants liking... Really doesn't matter what WE like... Feel me???

I like to let others do the trial and error and I’ll come in behind them and buy what works best for the money. 400w hps/my would be my new veg and if I go led that’ll be for flower. I’m in no rush, just trying to research and figure out what is best.

I am getting pretty even coverage. I can even lean into my canopy.. I love spanning a 4 foot space with triple lights. I bet I could even push it to 5 feet wide.

I have quantum boards and they work great. However, if I was to redo my lights. I would go with strips for the more even light distribution across the canopy.

when you say strips you mean the boards or what strips are you talking about
I'm talking about the 4 ft Samsung F-series (lm561c) or Q-series (301b) strips. They do come on a board, but the board is 44" x 3/4" (1120mm x 18mm), so they call them strips. You can get 1 and 2 footers also, but it is a little more expensive for the same coverage as the 4 footers.

If you're interested in strips, the following article explains them, along with some sample builds:

I'm a big fan of the Quantum boards. I have two 260w kits in a 5x5 with a 400w magnetic induction PAR lamp. I plan on buying two more 260w kits and putting one at each corner of the tent and replacing the induction lamp with a QB18 Emerson effect 4' strip across the middle.

Before that I had two 260w kits in a 2x4 dimmed way down. Super efficient and amazing coverage plus the power to run CO2.

I noticed some other companies are coming out with LM301H V3 boards but HLG doesn't seem to have anything yet? Kind of lame. I might order one from Neimi instead.

Cobs work well, QBs however, are more efficient and they weight much less even with a heatsink. Add to that, they save 4 inches of headroom in a tent, and that can matter depending whit you grow. That said, my COB light has given me excellent results. Going to give the COB light to a friend soon, I've still got a few QBs sitting around lol! Going to build a light soon and going to add 2 more QB 304 to my first QB based light.
