Climate "crisis"

I just happen to feel that a planet wide disaster, that humans may or may not survive is probably the only thing that is going to wake us up. Historically humans have not been very sensitive to preventive measures, and that sure as hell hasn't changed. but seriously, we can all relate to this... this planet is a giant green house. everything we put into the atmosphere stays here until it is consumed by something that turns it into something else. But, if I'm not mistaken it's the first law of thermodynamics that states that time moves in the same direction as entropy, or decay. Meaning, as time goes forward chaos, or disorder follow suit. So, if you think about it. we're all fucked anyway, even if there is a life after this one, it won't last forever.

i agree with garden knowm about the quantity of stuff we produce and consume. people tend to blow off the comparably small pile of waste they generate as an individual as being insignificant. this is partly because the sheer size of the numbers we are talking about are really hard to visualize in our brains, and it is the nature of pride to step in the way of sensible reasoning, and so the stuff that computers and science have brought to us can often seem to defy common sense. being contrary to common sense is not a reason to discount what we learn from science- it's just a tool to help us measure things our senses have a hard time with. check out anything written by carl sagan- incredible scientist, humanitarian, and he LOVED weed just as much as we all do :)
 
Talking about waste: Here in Vegas (I grew up here in the 50s-60s), we had a fairly small "dump" on the eastern side of the valley on the slopes of frenchmans mountain, garbage trucks traveled daily on the dirt road to about 5 miles out of civilization and dumped their contents, by the late 80s, the dump had consumed the whole slope of frenchmans Mt. so they closed it down and moved to a site 20 miles North of town.
Now they cant build any houses on that property, which would be the most desirable building site in all of Vegas. They now have a trash collection site where all the trash trucks go and dump their trash which is then compacted and put into huge trash haulers and hauled to the dumps, leaving a trail of toilet paper and other light materials along the route.
The outgassing close to frenchmans Mt. has not been controled and is going to waste as well as polluting the air in the immediate area.
It's well known that the trash business is controlled by the, Mafia, and they abandoned the frenchmans Mt. site and left the cleanup to, guess who, us the taxpayers and the city council gave them a pass. Thats how politics works in Las Vegas.
 
isn't there a movement to collect that outgas from landfills? couldn't we "farm" our waste and use it to produce energy?

maybe it could generate almost enough energy to fuel the equipment needed to bury the garbage and transport it.

places like NY just load up super-barges full of garbage and dump it out in the ocean... that's crazy.

Yeah, at least it could run some electric generators and couple them to the grid.

now that i think about it i remember the story i read. it was a news article where a landfill exploded due to a build up of methane. they said it was normally vented and burned but some government worker didn't do the safety checks and ignored procedure.

i'm sure there are ways to plan them out right so the gas can be cheaply captured and used for something. could be a booming business for someone inclined to pursue it.
