I prefer large bulbs. If your having trouble finding high wattage cfl's try ebay they have a good selection.

don't try home depot. The largest i could find were only 40 watt, warm white (2700K), CFL's. Im looking to buy some 100 watt bulbs also but i'm trying to stay away from online buying. So far, no luck.

Kassidy,
I grow with CFL's as well. The largest bulbs you'll find in stores like Home Depot and Lowes will be those very 42 watt CFL's that you already have. If you want bigger ones, youll have to order them from online or get them from ebay. I'm using smaller bulbs, just more of them. I built a hood/reflector for them and they are working fine. I have a grow journal that has a diagram of my hood along with lots of pictures that you should check out. it's called WB's grow. Good luck.

WTF. Dude do u guys actually look when ur in the stores?? Home Depot 100 watt CFL for 59.99.(10,000 lumens) go to the HD and ask the floor people where the outdoor lighting is. That is where u will find the big cfls u wont find them where u find a normal lightbulb or indoor cfls cuz that's notwhat they are used for. i use 4 of em right now. they are perfect for vegging the light is even kinda blueish becuz of the spectrum. ur going to have to wire in a plug end so spend the 3.95 on a eavy duty plug connector and 5.00 for a heavy duty extension cord wire and knock it out. good luck.

I was looking at them in the beginning...thinking I could use them for veg. They even have a 400 hps there, but it's a small enclosure, and you'd have to wire it yourself. The best place to get lights is online, competition is a great thing.

It is cheaper to go online and get them but for people who are pressed for money and can only afford to put out a hundred or 2 hundred at a time this is the ticket. Today i did an experiment dude. I took a styrofoam ice chest, u know the kind that costs like 2 or 3 dollars at the dollar store, i made a hole in it big enough for the socket thats inside the metal light enclosure. I cut the black and white wire thats connected to the socket and made a junction box in between the metal enclosure which is now my ballast enclosure and the styrofoam cooler. i got a big sheet of plexiglass from home depot and i cut it the size of the lid of the cooler. I took the actual lid and cut out a window in it and glued the plexiglass in place and taped it onto the cooler. I bought 2 cheap ass flexi dryer hoses and made two holes in the top of the cooler and mounted them. I attached a bath fan to the unit and voila i made an air colled light hanger for approxiamately 50 bucks. not only is it cheap it works great and for u paranoids who are afraid to order anything online this goes to show u that anything can be done just as well as the big guys do u just gotta want to do it. Neccessity is the mother of invention. BTW u can buy a 400 watt hps lite on home depot.com for 200 bucks total. And u dont have to worry about it breaking down/burning out/burning up like those 109.00 light and ballasts systems that u see on ebay.
