Can a subforum change the WORLD?

Nothing needs to change it's fine the way it is. People come in, look around, stay, leave. Sometimes, people volunteer information of their own volition...Sometimes people never contribute a thing....doesn't matter....that's the nature of a public forum. Ya gotta take the bad with the good.

Some guys go to the same bar every night after work...sit in the same spot...talk the same shit...eventually think that the spot in the bar is "theirs" because they created their own routine there. Truth is...it's not. It's still everyone's bar and everyone is welcome to sit wherever they want...and discuss things the way they choose to do so (within the rules of course). IF the real owners decide that THEY want to change the way things work, then it's their right, alone, to do so.
It ain't fine. It's a mess, I just don't understand why it hasn't been fixed. These problems were solved long ago on the internet, on other forums. Age doesn't kill things, stagnation does. There are some ancient forums still going strong.

And the only people around here who piss me off are the feces throwing moneys who think they are OG experts because they've been around awhile and can ape guys doing the real brainwork. The ones who are more interested in winning arguments than finding truth. There are worse things than being wrong, but you wouldn't know it spending any time here.

It might seem like I am getting bitter awfully fast, but I started with LEDs about 6 years ago over my reef tank, growing coral instead of plants. The early days were rough, the amount of unknowns huge, and it was fun. Now everybody thinks they have it all figured out, but the ironic thing is that there are still plenty of unknowns, lots of shit science doesn't have an answer for and would be great to discuss. Instead of arguing with empty egos.

Having up to date information in popular threads wouldn't solve everything, but I guarantee it would get people up to speed with basic math and current best practices faster, and prevent some monumentally silly arguments in the future.

Oh well. What a depressing thread. But @Growmau5 your enthusiasm is awesome, so rock on. At least you are trying to improve things instead of saying it can't be done.

I was here a long time ago, reading, reading reading...
I feel nostalgia too.

At this time no one was selling COB fixtures, or advertising COB led company, no one was talking about them yet anyway... People were trying spectrum, with golden dragons, osram oslon etc... such as SDS in ASTIR grow panel, Supra SPL, Guod small fixture, or I even remember a guy doing 450nm and UV chinese cob led under remote phosphore lenses. I even remember reading post from Knna who knows him now ?! he is maybe the first DIY led guy, SupraSPL was his friend and I could say "padawan" and he still talks about him ;)

Ideas, reflection, share, trial and error, and grow, grow grow, that was the leitmotif !

Then came Mr flux, and his killer cabinet, and this is were started the COB mania ! Very exiting at the beginning ! I remember my first Vero 13 fixtures, it is the turn in led diy light for me and lot of us now.

At this time RIU led section was a small community where you can ask questions and get nice answer, were people educated you and you do your best to bring a part of the puzzle. I was coming everyday to learn.

Now, it is just lot of threads, talk and blah blah, always the same stuff, COB COB COB.
pretty much boring.
Lot of people repeat themself again and again, They are new and don't respect this section the same way as we use to do because they don't know where does DIY actually come from. how much time it took to people to get to the COB diy std led light.

When you want to see a journal, you have to read pages of useless debate to see few plants.
You want to come back to basis, and find an old informative thread, you have to lose lot of time because of all the useless threads people create: "HELP" while they just redo a lamp everyone has done and report before.

Also because everyone tell you : no what you think is shit just go COB, no one is trying anything any more... very sad, how intolerance came in here, totally the opposite of the initial spirit.

Yes the soul of this section is gone, as well as the people who brought you the COB model.

All my respect to Rahz, greengenes, Growmau5 and many others who understood the spirit of the section even if they arrived "lately" (or maybe I didn't notice you before).

In the mean time, some oportunist benefit from others long work and the new popularity of this section to boost their newly created company, this wasn't the spirit neither... So don't come and say you don't like the section anymore, as at the end you use this knowledge to make money.

Copy pasting Wikipedia is easy but you will never be able to wright a single page of it by doing so...
The wiki writer are not gone, they come back and check the section, drove by nostalgia like me, I know it, but because of all this noise, they don't speak anymore...

just reading the first page makes me move on LOL. but i have to put up thought, it's a FORUM....

why do people want to censor this place? are they haters, are they scared, are their ego's to F-ING big?

Everyone has a contribution, this is not a communist society here, this is the WWW.

I don't mind the HUGE pictures or the amount of junk posted, I have a lot of WEED to smoke and time to kill, it all makes for better reading.

If you want to make a site dedicated to a point of view on LED, well to go the internet get a host and put up your own site and forum and your shit how you want it. DUH!

Peace, and happy budding!

This forum can be hard to navigate and very intimidating when you are looking for answers and or help.

Regardless of your experience level now, we all had to start at the beginning and someone helped us. People new to the LED sub forum have a choice to either trawl through endless posts and gather bits of information here and there. Or start a thread and hopefully not get ignored by the community. I suppose they could take their chances in the "new to LED" thread and reading page after page of barking and snapping. Most will reach for the lowest hanging fruit and post a thread that we have all seen a hundred times before. That is what I did.

If you understand a subject, teach the next person with patience and grace. If you disagree with someone do so with respect. Counter their statements with your own and let the reader decide. To compete in malicious one-upmanship is counter productive and to be honest on an anonymous public forum quite a craven act.

I vote for a sticky with links that can be edited when new information becomes available. Give new folks a post that guides them (and me) to the answers they seek. More experienced members can deflect repetitive questions by directing new users to the "read this first" sticky. @Abiqua and @Rahz have laid the foundations above.

It is indeed a public forum and members can do as they wish. Many people unselfishly give to others while some are content to only take or start a ruckus.
If knowledgeable members are put off from contributing because of constantly duplicated questions or incessant bickering the community will suffer.

Very few people in my "real" life know what I do for a hobby. I come here to share in that with you all. I am grateful to have a place in which to do so. Anything that makes this refuge more of an enjoyable experience has my vote.

Cheers,
Will

I enjoyed this forum at a time where it was still unclear whether led could rival hid, back when those of us that were believers felt like we had to prove to hid people that led could indeed rival hid, perhaps dominate them.

However, led is generally what newbie growers think will make them grow great pot when in fact it's not all about the lights. Newbies are constantly making leds look bad...

I've now moved on and rather go in the organic section or the seed and strain.

This section has become boring to me but I do appreciate people like u growmau that keep it alive and keep researching so that next time time I need a fixture I can simply pop here and ask what s the new thing, for now I'm just happy rocking the cobs and working at improving my growing skills, and genetics!!

I agree we need a dedicated led grow sub sub forum. I really appreciate all the invaluable advice and info provided by many here but I have noticed it is getting tedious to navigate and glean the information needed for a DIY. I just finished my 1k led system and want to share my next grow start to finish in the DIY led grow forum. OG

You take advice from people who make money selling you shit?

Right...
hahaha... Would agree with this post. I went to buy some dirt the other day and my local guy asked me if I had any equipment he could purchase used. I told him I may part with my HPS because I am using LED. He proceeded to show me the KindLED he was selling. Then told me that COB were a waste of money and the cost is too much and not worth it.

to be clear, and you have the words from a fairly long time grower here, COBs do work, I have done a grow with nothing but COBs and had my best yield ever, with no heavy yielding strain or anything special, had a few runts in the mix, buds were dense big and frosty, other long time growers couldnt believe my grow, how cool, no AC, smelly, frosty, THCy, everything was there. So yeah, COBs do work, if you can't afford them it's a different story but don't hate on them. They are a good long term investment, never have to worry whether you bulbs are getting too old or if they are still good for a bit, priceless.

Threads age here very quickly. Lights available to growers are improving on several fronts. Imagine coming here as a person thinking about LEDs and clicking on " LED companies w/links" sticky. Just click on pg 1.

Some of the threads listed here are gold! thanks!

Is it just me, or does this subforum get over half the traffic on the board? any of the other forums seem either dead or even more overrun with noobs than this one.

and yes i understand we were all newbs at one point. not hating, i havent been around here that long myself but i like to think i can contribute in other areas re: electrical and mechanical fundamentals, etc. and been using leds for almost a decade for better or for worse.

truly a unique place in time here and its exciting to see such rapid advancements. ive been a part of other DIY 'movements' (biofuels/alt energy/electronics/etc) it is always fun to se epeopel applying tech from multiple cutting edge market segments and assembling them into workable devices with some good ol elbow grease. kudos to all you guys who really put it out there and share knowledge freely and expect nothing in return other than your students to carry the torch and pay forward. you know who you are :)

"If you understand a subject, teach the next person with patience and grace. If you disagree with someone do so with respect."

That should be the core of every forum, and most have rules stating this is the expected behavior. And this is exactly what is lacking with RIU, rude, obnoxious behavior is rampant and will remains so as it seems RIU has taken a wild west attitude and lets anarchy reign. When you come here with polite questions, or post answers that you know without a doubt are true, yet are denigrated, told your are nothing more than an ignorant intruder begging of the master to enlighten you, it does little to encourage enthusiasm.

Debate is suppose to be part of the forum discussion experience. Try reasoning with these gods of the forum and you'll quickly be browbeaten into submission or caused to flee the forum. I chose to stay and learn from and share with 2 members. I occasionally browse for information from other threads, but as soon as I run into the haughty attitudes and the insults slung at anyone daring to challenge their superior knowledge, its time for me to retreat. Its a real shame that a forum like this, with so much information, allows new members to be driven off by the hoi poloi.........

This is a common problem with many forums. It has killed many a forum in the past. I don't know the answers to fix this, yet, i'm a member of a forum where this type of behavior is NOT tolerated, at all, and that for sure is needed here!

"It is indeed a public forum and members can do as they wish"
No, they cannot, not if you wish your forum to survive! Have you ever been to a town meeting where the didn't enforce the rules of public forum? BEDLAM! Polite discourse will become shouting and and angry accusations! Sound familiar? Although
I'm sure that's exactly the thing that certain people enjoy, they shouldn't be given a place here to stir up shit, yet you only get accused of being a troll for asking pertinent questions about people's information sources....

I continue to come here to follow 2 members threads and will continue to do so. I'd love to be more active, but posting in this forum is like hunting Bear without a weapon......
