is there a good plain soil available that has no nutes in it for mixing my own soil mixture? have used hyponex in the past , but find it very hit or miss if you get a good bag or bunch of sticks. any suggestions would be great.

I like to use plain ole garden soil out of my backyard as my dad has been growing organic veggies in it for years.

If you dont have this choice, I just used a no-name potting soil that had no nutrients in it and had perlite, sand, and peatmoss.

Check your local area. In my area there's a company that produces compost (for outside growing) and potting soil for container growing (indoors or out). All made to Oregon Tilth certification. As an example, the potting soil is 35% top soil, 35% vegetative matter and 30% pumice (better than perlite). Sold by the cubic yard, 1/2 cubic yard and five gallon bucket.

Just buy a bale of peat moss, earthworm castings, compost, perlite or rice hulls, and some dolomite lime, and mix it together and allow it to sit for a while, then you're good to go. I like to use between 45-55% peat moss, 25-35% perlite(want to start using rice hulls though, they sound interesting), 15-25% of a mixture of quality compost and earthworm castings, and dolomite lime at 2 Tbs per gallon of soil. It's a pretty well known recipe, I think, but works excellent. I feed this type of mix with ewc and guano teas, also AACT's.
