do you think i should use a 600 or 1000 watt hps light for a 5' x 5' x 6'7" grow tent thats gonna have 6 plants in it

my vote is for the 600 as long as you keep the plant size in check. 1000s make a lot more heat

yeah what he said ^^^^^. Even if you put a 600watt in there you will want to air cool the hood. If you are going to air cool you could get a kilowatt. You may get more bud, that is what I would think. More light equals more bud. And you size is 5x5 so you might want the kilowatt. I always thought 400watts for 3x3, 600watts for 4x4 and 1000 watts for 4x4 or a little bigger. May people use 1000watts in a 4x4 too though. Is this your first grow?

From all thats been popular lately, i think the answer would be 1x 600w light. Personal pref though, get a digital ballast 400w with hortilux, etc hps bulb that lets blue out too and put cfls too(150w+ output in 27 and 6k, one each?). My friend has his 600w digital outside his room and it makes WAY less temp than the old 400w one. Also, it is SO worth it for a switching ballast, so you can use mh or hps bulbs. I am a floro person for veg personally. What it comes down to: Is this your only area for cultivation? If so, find a switching digital 600w ballast if you plan to go from veg to bloom in one area. Otherwise, a 2/4 foot t5 for veg of mothers/clones and a 400w digi with hps for fruiting plus a few 3 and 6.5 cfls even spaced with sog/scrog is great for your size from what I have seen.

I say 1000 with air cooling. Make sure u get a big enough fan tho. My buddy uses around a 400 cfm fan with 6'' ducting for his 1000w hps. I would think it would plenty cool for ur tent.

why so few plants in such a big space. For six plants the 600 watter is more than enough but if you ever want to really maximize that space you need the 1000 watter in my opinion.

if your buying new, buy a 600 watt digital (not a cheap one), or if you dont have the bucks buy a 1k magnetic ballast and both should have air cooled hoodes with 6 inch ducting and at least a 6 inch fan.....I have a 5 x 5 x 6.5 grow tent with a 1k HPS and a 250 watt metal halide, both in cool tubes and have no heat issues at all.....i have an intake fan and an ocsilating fan and the plants are as happy as could be

If I had your tent I would even just use a 400 watter. But you were debating with a 600 and a 1,000. A 1,000 generates way more heat and consumes more energy. At 3 ft away from your canopy a 600 W HPS puts out the same lumens as would a 1,000 W HPS 4 ft away.

5 x 5 = 25, 600 divided by 25 is 24 watts per square foot. You could put 2 600 watters in there and still not reach the 50 watts p.s.f. rule.

edit: according to the grow books you need a 35 watt p.s.f. minimum to flower MJ

Tell that to guys like VV who use flouros to flower entire tables of MJ.

The debate on light power is for intensity. Id stand to reason that if anyone used a 600 as close to the canopy as possibly, the only thing that would happen is he would need to rotate the plants to keep them growing equally. This would be fine with a sixer.

Are you saying that more watts/lumens per square foot doesn't increase yield? If I were to put 6 plants in a 5x5 room with a 600 watter and I also put 6 plants in a 3.5x3.5 room under a 600 watter I would yield the same ammount of bud?

i think the 1000 watt with cooling or use the 600 for now then switch to the 1000 once you are ready to flower and have a bigger grow place

yea thanks for the advice right now i got a 600 and 1000 watt hps and used the 600 for my last grow in a small closet and it yielded well for the size of the plants. i used fox farm nutrients for my last grow has anyone tried any other brands and what do you suggest?
