I used Sta-Green's "container mix" and it was full of fungus gnat eggs. Spent about a week fighting the critters off once they got going. Next time I'm going with Pro-Mix BX and add a little more perlite and vermiculite. Just make sure you get sterilized soil or a soilless mix, or sterilize it first before transplanting.
i dont think they sell pro-mix at my lowes but there are a couple nurseries that i'm going to look at today, so hopefully i can just find a bag or 2 of that. My MG soil had gnats all in it for a while...kinda why i dont want to use it again.
How do you know if its sterilized or not?
also do you know if you need to mix in some bone & blood meal...currently all that i have is wormcastings but going to get everything soon.
Maybe someone else can chime in on the sterilized soil question. I was told that "soilless mixes" that have mostly peat in them are by definition sterile because they have no soil or bark, but I don't know that for a fact. I know that vermiculite and perlite are not "dirt" and are sterile as far as bugs go, but not sure about peat. Several people here swear by the Pro-Mix stuff (I bought some from a web site in 3.8 cubic foot compressed bags):
