Seems like you answered your own question. I would also suggest edibles.

if you are a cigarette smoker, quit. my dr. told me for years to quit so i could get better blood circulation to the area that is injured, loose a few pounds and more exercise. i finially gave it a go 3 years ago and i feel like a new man after using his advice. a bowl of smoke is usually enough to make all the hurt to go away. i got over 2 bad back injuries but now in my older years, osteoarthritis has set in. wish i had treated my body better as a young man....

I have been using vicodin for times of vigorous activity and smoking in the evening. For whatever reason I have found blue dream to be good for pain. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective) this is a pretty stone high. That is why I avoid it during the day.

I like to do breathing exercises while I'm smoking! it gets my mind off the pain and helps clear stale air out of your lungs so you can actually absorb more thc!

Breathing exercises, such as "Pranayam", keep you healthy by various means. In normal course we do what may be called "shallow" breathing. The lungs are neither fully expanded nor contracted. Therefore the air flow in the lungs is restricted. Breathing exercises generally increase the volume of air flow providing more oxygen and removing carbon dioxide more efficiently. In many breathing exercises you are told to hold your breath for some time. Depending upon the exercise you may be required to hold your breath either after inhaling, or after exhaling.

How does holding the breath help?
It is not possible to empty the lungs entirely; some amount of air will be there even after exhaling "fully". Normally there are some small pockets inside the lungs in which air tends to remain stagnant. Air inside those pockets does not join the main flow of air. It gets depleted in oxygen and fresh supply does not reach there. Blood coming in contact with air in those pockets does not get fresh oxygen and carbon dioxide is not removed from that part of blood. When you inhale air and hold your breath in that position, the air drawn inside the lungs gets more chance of mixing with stale air in those pockets. As more time is made available for air mixing, stagnant stale air is removed and supply of fresh air goes inside those pockets. Similar action takes place when you exhale air out and hold your breath. There is reduced pressure inside the lungs which draws out the stale air. The overall effect of these actions is that entire surface of alveoli, or air sacs inside the lungs gets larger amount of fresh air.

In "Pranayam" as you continue regular practice you are expected to increase the duration of holding the breath as well as number of times you do the exercise. You should increase both, not one at the cost of the other.

Holding the breath also helps you to concentrate better. In many breathing exercises, I will again take example of "Pranayam", you are required to concentrate on breathing and visualize the flow of air. For example as you inhale, you may be asked to visualize that you are drawing in life-force or "Prana" along with fresh oxygen. While holding the breath you may be directed to visualize that "Prana" is getting absorbed in greater quantity. When you exhale you throw out toxins as well as bad thoughts and at the same time "Prana" gets distributed in the body. Visualization has remarkable influence on the effectiveness of breathing exercises.

When you are holding your breath it is difficult to think of anything except your breathing.

To that extent it helps you in directing your concentration towards yourself.
The diaphragm, like any other body muscle also needs exercise. Breathing deeply and holding your breath provide exercise for the diaphragm.
I would strongly recommend that any breathing exercise, particularly "Pranayam", should be done under the guidance of trained persons only.
Any exercise will work better for you when you know how the exercise is helping you. Next time when you do breathing or any exercise, just be conscious of what is happening in your body and you will get better results for the same effort.

now in my older years, osteoarthritis has set in.
I'm dealing with that myself. Discs are getting smaller, and bone spurs that are getting bigger. Hurts like a motherfucker. My job is very physical, and the only way I'm able to do it is by eating Norcos every day, along with massive amounts of ibuprofen. I'm basically blowing out my liver while becoming a junkie. I really don't know what I'm going to do, but I'm not going to be able to keep this up for too much longer. I'm afraid for my future.

Sorry to here that dsm!!! I was working for subaru! making 32 and hour plus commission. I kept going as long as I could! now I am on disability and get 1066 a month then they take out 116 for medical, so really only 950! I got lucky and found a lady that wants to put up with me that has a good job so I'm doing good now, but a few years ago I was SCARED! I went to support groups and all that kinda stuff! The hardest part for me is I didn't prepare for the income loss and had my credit ruined (not that the medical bills weren't doing it already)! I Wish you the best!!!

If you are looking for pain relief in cannabis. try using "white" crosses. white widow, rhino, white russian, great white shark are very high in CBD's and CBN's. these help with pain issues. many times it is the application. while injesting via vaping, or smoking is the fastest delivery of these substances, it is often the weakest. topical oil lotions, or eating in butters and baked goods will be much more effective. as is the high. THC and its metabolites require fatty tissues to activate as that is where they store themselves in ones body.

I pretty much just keep smoking. I smoke about every 4hrs a few hits from a 2 foot bong. The simple fact is and studies have been done is that pain effects people different. 2 people with the same injury can have 2 completely different pain reactions. I am in the same boat I have huge back pain issue steming from a Fusion 20 years ago in the T and L spine. As well as about 6 months ago I fell and have buldge disks in my c5 c6 c7 and a Brekial Plexius nearve damage on the right side of my body effecting my right arm from shoulder to fingertips.

I have done meds pt trigger point injections tens units and trust me when I say this I dont get the kind of releif I get from smokeing as I do from the rest they simply dont last and make me unable to do anything but lay in bed and drool.

LOL! your post gives me new inspiration to quit though! as for the weight: i gained over 100 pounds since the pain started....but as of now i have lost more weight than i had gained! i don't think that losing weight helped my pain but it did make it easier for me to stretch......

Man, that Ibuprofen is deadly to the kidneys. Same thing for asprin and Ibuprofen off-shoots. I have the same thing as you ... spinal stenosis and its getting worse. I bake very strong peanut butter cookies and they seem to help with the pain.

were they called firecrackers? peanut butter between two crackers? i didnt really like those much. look up how to make cannabutter. you can make whatever you want that has butter in it. if you want to make brownies, id use oil instead because ive found its pretty hard to find a brownie mix that takes butter. toast with cannabutter is the shit. use wheat toast with a lot of grain. it helps take away the flavor.

edit: also, if youre in the bay area, im sure theres some real good edibles around you. look on weedmaps.com and weedtracker.com for local dispensaries with good edibles.

The mmj does offer some degree of relief, but that's only in the evenings. I can't work high, so I take pills. More and more pills.

I'm doing my best to keep it 40 mg or less a day, norcs or percs (oxy or hydro), but it's getting worse and my tolerance is going up. I'm gonna be a fucking junkie before I'm done.

I know how that goes! I had to quit when I lost insurance before, but now that I am taking them again I get scared taking what I am prescribed. I've never abused my meds but they make you crave them after a while.
