Any pointers to growing 1 lb plants?

You don't need crazy volume when you figure out that you are trying to grow roots. Not plants. When you figure out how to do that, the restrictions and boundaries expand quite a bit. Just my philosophy.

But you are inground so the roots will grow way past your 5 or 10 gallons of soil.
And yes roots are my main concern that is why they get plenty of amazing living soil. Bigger the roots the bigger the fruits. And no it is not about plant volume to me its about the amount of top colas.

Like this plant is my smallest in my garden but has more tops on it then I can count and will probably be my top producing or one of them anyways this yr. Screenshot_20200822-233255_Messenger.jpg

First legal outdoor here. Didn't have a plan and got stuck with a few more plants than I wanted. I'll have a clean planned grow next year..

Wet dry cycle with good organic soil will give huge yields in small pots. In ground I'm more concerned with organic concentrations and their availability. My root balls are really tight at harvest. Don't search for requirements.

So you dont think that your plants would be considerably smaller if it was just in a 5 gallon pot sitting on top of the ground vs in a 5 gallon back filled hole in the ground?

I would like to preface this by saying I have never grown cannabis but have been reading on this sight for three years. This will be my first grow. I am aware growing outdoors your plants are very vulnrable to the elements and pests. I am also very aware as a first timer I should not expect much and should not even be focused on yield. Despite this I want to try anyways. I know its impossible to estimate yield as a variety of factors are involved such as humidity, heat, veg time, genetics, strains, training, sunlight, watering schedules etc. With that out of the way...

Would anyone have some pointers to getting me close to or exactly a pound per plant for my first grow?

I have read people getting pound plants in as little as 15 gallon smart pots. I would love to go much bigger (50 gallons) but that is too much $$$ for me at the moment. I will be growing my plants in 20 gallon smart pots. My base mix will be as follows: 1/3 spagnum peat, ewc, and lava rock. I was also told to use mulch or straw to retain water. I will be using glacial rock dust for minerals, as well as spraying roots with myco. I have heard good things about malted barley for increased terpene production. I will be mixing an all purpose fertilizer in with my soil (5-5-5) I was told for simplicities sake as a beginner this soil mix would only require water and no teas/topdressing later on. I should also mention I am not able to veg indoors as I do not have the room in my house to do so. I will have to start from seed outdoors. :(

I live in the southern US. humidity can be high here and temperatures can average 80-95 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer.

If anyone thinks 20 gallon smart pots with that soil mix could yield close to a pound or more a plant I would greatly appreciate your feedback and any other tips.
Can you supplement lighting outdoors at all? So that you can plant earlier and keep them in veg with the lighting? Most cant...I know I cant where I live.

My suggestion then since you can not veg indoors is to try germinating the around the beginning of April. This way if outdoors the whole time the plant won't be sexually mature yet until the days have gotten long enough to keep it in veg.

I also suggest starting in small containers and transplanting a few times so that it doesn't get over watered and drown the seedlings. I would not just put a new plant in the whole 20 gallons.

After they get big enough lst training is an amazing way to get lots and lots of tops and yield. Trellis nets work great for this and are cheap, and they also add much needed support to the plants.

With that said and what your soil and plan is ...I think you will have no problem reaching your goal.

Good luck

Niice..here’s my 30gal tote of a “lucky bagseed” I found in a bud I baught in a dispensary it was named “snickerdoodle” underneath in brackets said (cookies n cream x granddaddy purple) some of the best stuff I had in a while beautiful tones/hues of bright purple flaked throughout its semi-dense popcorn nug structure . I wonder what she is for a hybrid possibly 70/30 indica dom? She stretched pretty crazy , I’m scared she may hermie but she had a pretty flawless life so far with her organic ammendments n whatever. Won’t be done til mid October or later as well I baught a greenhouse for her an my other 7-14 gal pots, I figure I should finish flowering her in my garage under a 600w I rly don’t wanna lose her even though she a bagseed she’s my favourite plant an it’s like 1/5 the size of my biggest lemonade this year lol (8ft x 6/7ft)

Boatguy is right. I have already had one fool jump my fence this year. Full coverage cctv with motion alarms alerted me to them. Not sure if it was the dog or racking 3" mag rock salt shell. But I don't think he will be back. Don't advertise specific location details. You may end up having to defend your property. I have some less than lethal insanely cruel surprises after all the years of BS. Had to go with a greenhouse after all the low life scum I've dealt with over the years.

To the OP. I get a pound by starting my outdoor plants in September indoors. Veg all winter with LST and topping. 5 gallon holes in organic soil will do it. /but my big girls are in 100 just for some extra food. I've pulled over a pound in a gal pot indoors. Same technique. But twice daily watering and View attachment 4662037View attachment 4662038crazy PPMs.
I started that big one in the cage April 12th it’s a c99 x blueberry “fast version” that took the longest to flower out of everything my gorilla skittles included lol smaller plant in cage short n bushy is my best pheno of the 8ball kush by Barney’s farm, the small plant in 10gal pot in mid flower is my smallest lemonade OG x freezeland she smells sooooo sweet cuz I’m used to running straight freezeland nothing like this, this has lemon OG kush and haze crossed into it .got sum big 7-8 footers guerilla style in 60+gal holes in the ground started em late April there monsters like this c99 but taller, lil less bushy

Nice i used those totes for yrs growing in swamps very easy LB per.
U rly think that bag seed “awesome pheno from the lab” I’m guessing , that I caught... has a chance of producing a pound? The more I look at it it makes me think 8-10oz + ,for sure! Based on the amount of bud sites.. if that’s true I guess that c99 x blueberry should yield me 2+, this pic of her in the 30 herewas probly from end of July ,around the 25th my guess.. See how much she stretched I thought she was gonna b waaaay smaller when all said n done until she went into transition ahaha ,pics from her old pot (so happy with her she thrived in the pre ammended 2gal for 6wks then into this 125+gal hole an loved life ever since! No sign of unhappyness whatsoever only 5-6 yellow leaves way inside I had to pick off today that died from no sun other than that she never stops praying, super upset she taking this long to flower tho I’m gonna hafto build a hoop house overtop of her thank god she’s short (max out at 6ft probly, maybe lil less)

Nvm ,this is pics taken July 29th lol , one on the hill I threw in there is a gorilla skittles clone I bent under the tomatoe cage Pic taken end of July as well, she’s easily 8ft wide rn n bout 5-5.5ft tall they stretch like crazy end July through til now them 60/40 hybrids ,ain’t used to running anything like them here in Canada cuz they usually don’t finish on time (usuallyrun r2,skunk freezeland, purple kush, and early girl/early mandala) but I’m trying sum of these this year I cloned from my tent, saved a few blue cheese put one in ground and one in a 7gal pot there big plants holy fuck she’s twice as wide as anything else I have in 7s this year.. she’s only competing with cookie crosses and that 8ball kush pheno though n there relatively small specimens (14gal tote in pic is a gorilla skittles pheno#2)

Sow seed. Observe. Buy and read books, it's there.

This pic gets me PUMPED, you got 24oz dry off that?? Sweet, what was it’s final height? An what strain was that?? I’m gonna take some pictures later this morning at my guerilla site(s) .. Everything blew up BIG TIME I wanna show u sum stuff here once my iPad is charged enuff to bring into the woods lol .. the difference in my crop this year compared to prior years is , before, I used to sell hydro by the pounds/ounces so I barely had time to throw 3.8ft bags of moss on my wheeler, wheel it back to an open bog, cut the bags in half and put open side down, then cut the top off ,rough the top half up a bit and plant a small (6-10 inch) clone of freezeland/R2 , I usually did 25-40 plants like that but I fed them bottle nutrients most years and they just weren’t that “cared for” , they always had lots of yellow leaves and I’d be lucky to get a pound dry per every 3 of them... this year is a whole new ball game I have monster holes backfilled good soil and organics @3tbsp per gal of soil , just for their veg beds, An gave em two top dressings since planting them in their rich ass beds, the first of june...lots of worm casting top dresssings, they’ve had voodoo juice, calmag, silica, went thru a quart n a half of botanicare pure blend tea 0.5-0.5-1 so far as well, a full dose of 25ml per 5gal only brings my 90ppm tap water up to 160 or so it’s fuckin nice u won’t ever overdose nothing with that stuff but they stay nice n happy 24/7... everythnig is maxxin out HARD, I think... like that c99 x blueberry I sprouted April 12th! I got a dozen or so more like that, that never seen a yellow leaf yet and never stopped praying... maybe I’m gonna need a spin pro or sumthing to get it all trimmed? I think I have a lot more weight than I thought I did, based off your “1.5 pounder” lol

Plant w/largest buds - lemonade OG x freezeland, middle one beginning to flower is an eleven roses (thought it was an 8ball kush until it surpassed 4ft tbh) and the lanky one in the back budding is a freebie fem seed from realgorillaseeds.. easy sativa x skunk#1 .. she’s been flowering since mid July she’s taking her good ole time to flower anyway .. still got another 5 weeks or more by the looks of her she ain’t stacking on half as quick as my lemonades n Durban’s.. almost forgot to throw in that these plants had NO morning sunlight for the first month or so of veg lol waaay into July for sure is when I started cutting tree’s down aroUnd them an they still only get direct from like 9/10am til 4:30 or so , maybe an hour or two of shitty indirect before bed lol .. I got a lemonade getting full sunlight she’s about 15 inches taller and twice As wide il get sum harvest pics an final weights (I won’t know exactly the weight per plant the way I harvest but il have a good idea).. JUUUSsTT hoping for a nice finish no 3 day downpours a few days before harvest!?!?! It’s been a dry season so far! Fed these 3, bout 50gals other day Nd 15 more today.

Yes sir 23.70 oz. To be exact. Honestly I didn't measure the height but it was over 8 feet including the pot. This was cookies n chem from greenpoint. The flowers are very dense. I was calling them Brussel sprout buds. :D
