Who Grows The Best Weed In Colorado? Contest Aims To Find Out

A marijuana festival in Aspen, Colorado, this spring will be the first in the state where medical growers can put their strains in a contest. :leaf:

The Western Slope Cannabis Crown expects about 50 growers to enter their strains of cannabis, reports Carolyn Sackariason at The Aspen Times.

The contest will be held April 17-18 at the Gant.

The Cannabis Crown is open to the public and will include speakers, live music, information booths, and, of course, the strain competition where growers will vie for the "Crown." :bigjoint:

"We want to get the best of the best in there," said festival organizer Bobby Scurlock.

Whereas such contests (beginning with what may be the granddaddy of 'em all, the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam) have traditionally been decided by human judges, the Western Slope Cannabis Crown will add a new wrinkle: The marijuana strains will be diagnostically tested for their THC levels by Denver-based Full Spectrum Laboratories (I hope they're planning on testing CBD levels as well, since that affects the high).

Strains will also be tested for how well they relieve patients' ailments. And, yes: Patients will be able to vote on a "People's Choice" strain.

According to Scurlock, the "People's Choice" will narrow down the field for the Crown, but the ultimate winner will be based on the diagnostic test.

Growers will be allowed to sell to medical marijuana patients. Only registered Colorado patients will be able to buy products from vendors, and sales will have to occur outside the conference at an Aspen hotel.

According to Scurlock, the marijuana sampling will likely be done in a private condo or room where the providers are staying.

"This is not about potheads running around the streets," Scurlock said. "This conference is to enlighten people and talk about the benefits, and its economic impact.

Scurlock hopes this year's event is a big enough success that it can grow into a week-long conference next year.

According to co-organizer Nathan Traul, co-owner of High Country Caregivers, as many as 400 strains could be featured at the conference. His company alone will enter 40 strains.

"The reception has been great," Traul told the Times.

There will also be entries for edible forms of marijuana, such as cannabis-infused brownies.

According to organizer Scurlock, about 1,500 tickets have already been sold for the two-day event. Tickets are $25.

Proceeds from raffles will benefit disaster relief for Haiti. Items to be raffled include grow room kits, vaporizers and other merchandise.

They should charge a little more for the tickets so that people can sample the strands and place a vote. The problem is you would be so stoned after 2 or 3 samples that everyone would forget to vote. LOL. It would be a 400 way tie.

I would hope that there will be judging as well. There is more to quality meds than a high THC number. The CBN/CBD along with the THC makes the meds along with taste/smell. They should do both for the crown and then mabey have a few catagories. It's their show so whatever happens everyone will be in the same boat. We already had a pre-event meeting with our crew and we will deffenatley be there. It would be so cool to meet with other RIU members and share some qualities meds and good times. Hope you can make it!!! Should be a massive turnout...

Anyone can buy the $25 ticket and go. Only people with cards can go in some parts of the event. To become a judge you must have a medical card and buy one of the $350 golden tickets. Easy as that.

Myself, my roommate, and my lady friend will all be in attendance. Hunter S Thompson's wife will be speaking as well as the editor of High Times. There should be several other notable speakers as well as some bands. Plus the 140+ strains that have already been entered. Should be a pretty solid weekend! Here's the link to the official website, it's pretty worthless at the moment but they should be posting an itinerary soon.

Someone tried to sell us their Golden Ticket for $1000 on there, not knowing that we are close with the organizer and aren't total morons.

We are still trying to make it happen. We just finished up the Colorado Cannabis Conv in denver and are completely slammed with work but if we can make it we def will. I'm loving Co and can't wait to get all my strains rocking. I was talking to one dispensary owner that has some of my gear in stock and was planning on taking it to Aspen. I've got a ton of exciting things that are going to happen for Boulder/Denver/Co Springs and have finally lined myself up to make them all Happen this year... Look for a Re-Release of the entire Brothers Grimm line-up-----Happy Farmer Hydrorganic super center's----Humboldt care and wellness center's in Denver and Co Springs along with a few other surprises... Hope we can make it to Aspen as we originally planned but if not Best of luck to all of you growers...Hope to see you soon!!! VonDankbongsmilie
